moving out of ag trading to energy
I’m currently at an ABCD working as a jr trader in grains. I kind of want to get out of the mid west and go back to nyc area. is there any way viable way to do this without going back to school (nyc firms or BBs with actual ag desks)? or should I switch to energy or another commodity to be able to move

physical but I can probably start to touch paper too in 1-2 years
Dreyfus is in Connecticut but I know they have a lot of ag stuff in kc as well. They’re the closest grain company to nyc I can think of. Bunge is moving right now from white plains to saint Luis.
What’s making you want to move? Just the location?
Yea, I'm from the nyc metro area. location and family is a big factor.

EDIT: Maybe check out Purdue they’re more in the south but they have an office in Maryland which is at least a little closer.

Do you recommend switching to energy sooner rather than later for more options to move to?
Not sure why someone is hating on my response. Anyhow, the longer you wait to switch, the more contacts you leave behind... So if you already can point to commercial experience, switching sooner is probably better.
I believe ECOM has NY presence, but that is not Energy.
It is very hard, if not practically impossible, to switch from physical ags at an ABCD to energy without some sort of very solid connections to the firm in question or starting over from scratch. Some unique backgrounds could be helpful, but unlikely.
Possible, but you would have to start from the bottom again. The ops is different, you need to learn the product. No one will hire you straight out as a trader.
I do know one guy that moved from ags to energy but had to start as an analyst. Connections helped him to line up interviews
Here's an almost guranteed way to do it without going back to school. 1. Get into ABCD (Great you've already got the first step!!) 2. Join their biofuel/diesel desk. 3. Kick ass, take names and transition to an O&G firm to trade their biofuel, ethanol, RINS etc etc book. 4. You've done it! Now you're in an O&G firm making O&G money and trading a cross agri-oil product.
