Moving to London | Recommended Neighborhoods?

Hi everyone,

I will be moving to London to continue my IBD analyst stint, coming from the US. Any neighborhoods would you recommend? Looking for a neighborhood that would be great for singles/young professionals, has lots of culture, not too pricey, visually appealing. An added bonus would be parking but that is not a dealbreaker.

Please do let me know, and of any other advice for people making the London move.

Where will you work? Generally look for what tube lines can get you to your office (you will likely take cab back, but tube in.)

Kensington, Notting Hill, Pimlico are nice, fairly well connected but more pricey. Chelsea also very nice, its well connected on the Eastern part (less so west), also pricey. These are ok if you work in the City/somewhere west, less for Canary Wharf (unless you are ok with commute >40min). More parks around there if that matters.

More mid price - central areas like Clerkenwell, Barbican, Old Street - great if you work in the City, generally connected with everything, somewhat less residential feel but pretty good city vibe (ex covid) and good value. Fewer parks.

More north - Hampstead Heath is a lovely neighbourhood, but less well connected and more for families.

People generally try to live north of the river (better tube connections and nicer areas), but e.g. Borough, Bermondsey, London Bridge are decent areas too, more affordable, and there are nice restaurants.

I'd avoid East London tbf (things on the DLR e.g. Shadwell, Limehouse, but also Stratford - if you work in Canary Wharf optically they seem close and convenient but I'd go somewhere else.)

What are the best areas to live in if you work in Canary Wharf? Commute shouldn’t be too long looking for a flat with a roommate

Not the original commenter here, but I think I can provide some insight into Brixton.

In short: it’s a relatively dangerous area. Definitely not for young professionals. Lots of gangs, knife crime is a huge problem. To be fair, knife crime is a big thing in London as a whole, but especially in Brixton.

Source - I live in London too.

Brixton is not somewhere you wanna be living, if you can I would go north of the river.

Around Mayfair is pretty expensive (marylebone/Knightsbridge etc) but you can try paddington/bayswater which will be cheaper, albeit slightly longer commute.

Soho would be a great choice for you in terms of culture, location (next door to Mayfair)

Just remember to check the tube lines where you live - nothing worse than having to take a million different lines or even a bus on your morning commute
