I've done several searches on google and online and seen similar questions asked, but few direct answers.
If I am a finance and accounting major, without the prereq 4 semesters of calc etc that's needed for an MFE, does that make it impossible for me to get a Masters in Finance as well? If I bothered it would have to be a top 10 MFin program.
no, you don't need an extensive math background in undergrad to qualify for an MSc Finance
Is there a way to verify this for specific programs?
For example I've looked at both Princeton and MIT and neither of their websites list heavy math prereqs but on forums people say you need a math background
It depends the program....
For Example MIT and PRinceton both of Masters in Finance....but they also have Masters in Mathematical Finance. If you look at the Mathematical/Quantitative programs you'll see the math requirements...I know MIT had them on their website when I looked.
Regular MFin's like Math but there isn't a pre-requisite amount, if you did will in FInance and Accounting I think they can assume you can add, subtract, divide, multiple, etc.
I am applying for both MSF programs too, MIT and Princeton~ Same as you Acc/Fin majors, I spoke to many alumni and they said for MIT, they want quantitative/programing skills - just bcs its MIT.. Princeton probably has similar story..
I just added a Minor in Maths and Im taking four more classes, Cal III, Multivariable Cal, Differential Eqn and Linear Algebra..
If you can, I would advice do the same to raise your competitive edge.. I'm going to give up a GTS full time offer (bwt 90g 1st yr after bonus) at Citi NY if I get into any of these programs; I really wanna do trading.. Hope its worth it.
