MSF for Consulting, Worth it?
Hey guys,
I was wondering if the MSF is worth it, especially if you want to get into MBB or Tier 1 consulting firms? I go to a semi - target school which has an integrated MSF program so I would be applying to that and wouldn't need to take the GMAT.
Some MSF's do well with consulting, but not all of them. Vanderbilt places well into consulting, UVA does, I believe UTA also.
A MMS might be a better fit.
So the integrated program is for UTA but are other MSFs worth it like if you can get in MITs or WUSTL or other tops ones, the reason why I'm considering the UTA integrated is cause it's relatively cheap like ($35K comparatively)
Vanderbilt's MSF places well in consulting
There isn't a single MSF in the country, with the possible exception of MIT, that will give you a good shot at tier 1 consulting. It's possible at some programs (Vandy/Wash U), but highly unlikely. It's just not what the MSF aims to do. You can get into tier 3 consulting fairly easily though (Big 4 advisory) and try to transition into an LEK/OW/Parthenon type of shop (if you're good).
if you don't mind can you elaborate on what an MSF aims to do? Im really curious on what I may potentially be getting myself into. Also I thought if you have a solid GPA from a decent MSF tier 1 consulting will give you and interview and then from there its all on you and your case prep
MSFs are for individuals that screwed up recruiting in undergrad, basically (or for those that didn't have access to recruiting in undergrad). It's a second opportunity to break into finance. The top programs allow you to break into AM/IB/ER. Lower tier programs put you into accounting-lite (FP&A, small IM, Bval) with some IB (mostly boutique).
There are exceptional candidates, lucky candidates and connected candidates that, from time to time, go into BB/EB IB, MMPE, or MBB. This is rare (particularly the latter two).
MSF to consulting (MBB/Tier 2) (Originally Posted: 05/25/2016)
Considering getting an MSF directly after undergrad to re-recruit for consulting (MBB/Tier 2), with finance as a backup. I am a rising senior with a 4.0 gpa in finance, strong work experience, and extracurriculars, but I am not confident this fall's full-time recruiting will be any better than internship recruiting because I go to a non-target school with 0 alumni at reputable consulting firms. I only received one consulting interview this spring. I am taking the GMAT this summer and will be targeting the USC and UT Austin MSF programs. I know both schools are at least semi-targets for consulting. I am also somewhat interested in investment banking. I have internship experience in startup consulting and venture capital. Is getting an MSF a decent backup plan?
This may sound crazy but I don't think you'd get into Texas because the program is explicitly for non finance undergrads.
I'm not saying it's impossible but the only finance undergrads that I've ever heard of were a few international students, like one a year.
I've heard that. Still probably worth applying because I would get in state tuition.
Go to an MMS program instead. Duke, Northwestern, and Michigan come to mind.
While consulting is my first choice, the main reason I am targeting MSF programs is because I am also interested in a career in finance. I would eventually like to work in PE/VC. Do many MMS graduates go into finance?
