MSRED/JD vs. MBA/JD
Hey guys, I'm in the real estate field and aspire to be in REPE, or REDev. I have a couple of questions; First are the dual programs worth it?
Secondly, would you rather get a MBA/JD or MSRED/JD, or would you just not get the JD at all?
Lastly, how much of a time commitment will this take?
A JD takes three years of your life. You should absolutely not get a JD unless you plan on being an attorney. If you are set on law, but are interested in RE or corp law go ahead and tack on an extra year for a masters. If you just want to work in REPE it makes zero financial sense to get a law degree. You will miss out on three years of salary and promotions while likely taking on $100k plus in debt.
There is something to be said for going to law school for the intellectual pursuit, but most of us don't have the time or money for that.
What's your under grad degree?
Also why not the MBA/MSRE?
BS Finance, concentrations in economics, alternative investments Top 25 school East Coast.
I look at a lot of real estate titans such as Stephen Ross, Sam sell, and a good number of them have a jd
Wait Sam zell dropped out early, but there are still many others
These guys probably were attorneys at one point in their life. I wouldn't recommend getting a JD unless you actually want to be an attorney for at least a few years. Pretty much everyone I know in RE that has a JD was a lawyer for 10+ years.
Both law and real estate were different industries back then; I'm sure a person could make this path work, but this is not the path to working at some big ass REPE fund.
Only clear path I have seen is BS -> JD -> RE Lawyer -> In house lawyer for RE Company
In the future I'd like to create a REPE Shop or develop properties.
I felt that there will be a lot of rules and regulations that would be important for me to know if I did the JD/MBA dual program (as well as make me more well rounded).
