my life is over
I'm now a junior, an international student from a non-target (maybe semi-target regionally). Did a couple first rounds and made it to 1 superday - didn't work out too well and now I feel like my life is over.
I have been dreaming of being an investment banker since freshmen - since then I study hard, network hard and every alum I talked to believe that I am doing all the right things.
Today when I was talking with my contact, he told me that you simply need some luck with this kind of market and my best bet is to get an MBA after several years. I agree but giving up now after being so committed to one job for 2.5 years since freshmen year is very tough.
Sorry for being so sentimental on a public forum. But there are not really too many people who can truly understand my situation - no brand name recognition back in my home country, and Visa status limits me to focus only on BB in U.S.
Just need some advice here. Move on or move forward?
I know I will start cold-calling boutiques next week and keep my heads up.

Your best luck is to apply for a position with a F500. Most of them sponsor F1. Otherwise, you are a self-made loser if you don't consider other options than "Wall Street".

Seconding F500s. You might be able to land FT BB next year if you sell yourself right during interviews regarding why you want to switch from F500 to IB. Worst cast scenario you do the fortune 500 thing for 3-5 yrs after college and then go MBA->BB associate. Ibanking is probably the most overrated industry right now anyway.
With that kind of mentality, you wouldn't have lasted too long in the first place. If you are thinking about giving up now, it was never your passion. Move on.

When did we start recruiting pussies to be on WSO? This forum has been blasted by fucking babies crying and contemplating suicide over the past few months. If you want sympathy, go to church or go post on a fucking knitting forum. Everyone here who has gained employment in IB has either worked hard in school or networked their ass off to get it, and if you didn't it is probably because you either didn't try hard enough at one of those or you just don't have the personality that convinced someone that they would enjoy working with you over another candidate. If being in IB wasn't in the cards for you and you're at a point where you can't interview anymore, then go do something else and move on with your life. Don't come on here and prove to everyone what a little bitch you are.

Hey man, I'm sorry to hear that recruiting didn't go as well as you hoped. For what it's worth, I go to a target, and I have a lot of very talented and motivated friends here who also didn't get any SA positions (some were international as well). It was a bad year for everyone.
If you are set on working in IBD, I would recommend that you look to opportunities internationally, or in your home country. I am an international student as well (at a U.S. college) - in freshman year, I knew that it would be impossible to find an internship in the U.S., since only the BBs will sponsor (as you noted) and they wouldn't take a freshman. I interned in Hong Kong during my freshman summer instead, as they are much more welcoming there to sponsor foreigners than companies in the U.S. My internship lasted just over a month but they were still happy to sponsor, and I think that type of attitude is more common generally in Asia. The firm wasn't a BB, it was a local Chinese brokerage.
So, could you apply to banking jobs internationally or in your home country? That's what I would focus on. If your goal is to be an investment banker, then perhaps you can be one in another geography (at least to start). Otherwise, your best bet to find work in the states would be a BO/MO role and then try to break into FO later.
Keep your head up lifes not over. I was turned down from every interview I had. IB is everything I wanted to do, but sometimes you dont get what you really want. Something better is def out there for you.
If you still really want IB full time recruiting is only a few months away. Start preparing for that. Network your ass off.
I don't know about the F500 summer internships since they do not recruit at school and I can't find any applications on their websites.
