Need a new laptop?

Hey all - I have a 2017 MacBook Pro i7 16gb ram with a Touch Bar. My firm runs everything off Citrix so I’ll have a virtual desktop. Should I upgrade/change to a Dell/Thinkpad or just keep this? They aren’t providing tech so I’ll have to shell out $1600 for the thinkpad X1 carbon/Extreme.

Just get a USB keyboard and use your current laptop. From a work perspective, what would be the marginal utility from spending the $1600 if you are just remoting in to a Windows computer at your bank?

If you can sell a 2017 Mac for 1k you should be in Sales, not IB

So, my understanding is that you have a desktop in the office that you'll never see, and you just get a projection of it onto your laptop, like you're watching a movie or whatnot?

In that case, what does it matter? If the remote desktop/server is doing all the lifting, and your mac is good enough to display the image that they're sending you, why change anything? (well, maybe add a nice mouse, keyboard, and monitor. (or two)

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

I would second the "get a nice monitor / keyboard / mouse" setup for remoting. I have an old laptop as well as a state of the art gaming desktop. If they are plugged into the same monitor, it doesn't make a difference for Citrix.

Apple makes some sweet monitors (maybe get that double monitor action going) and you can get the external trackpad as well as the Magic Keyboard which has the Numpad now!

Link to the keyboard (seriously the Numpad is hella useful for Excel): https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MQ052LL/A/magic-keyboard-with-numeri…

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.
