Networking at a Recruiting Event

What is the best strategy for networking at an IB SA on-campus recruitment event? I'm having a difficult time approaching the recruiters and asking pertinant questions. I'm getting tired of my peers asking the same stupid "tell me about
your typical day;" but honestly, what else is there to talk about?
What kinds of things should I ask them? How can I get information out of them that (1) makes me look intelligent and well-informed and (2) provides me with a good overall assessment of the position and the company.

Best Response

Here's what I do:

- Show up early to the info session (otherwise you will be there with 100 other people trying to get some face time in)

- Don't waste your time with recruiters unless it's a procedure question (i.e. when is the drop deadline?). Recruiters have virtually no say on who gets hired.

- Only talk to associates and above, analysts have little say also.

- Ask them real questions i.e. "what type of deals are you working on now", "how often do you hand off deals to product groups", etc. Try to be casual and conversational with them. If your questions sound canned they won't remember you.

- Don't waste anybodys time with dumb questions like "what is your culture like?", "what is the day in the life of an analyst like?". Read the vault guide for answers to questions like this. People ask these same questions every time and obviously dont know what's going on.
