Networking with people outside alums (non-target)

How do I find people on LinkedIn that aren't alums? Anything I should be selecting specifically in the filters section? I've only been networking with alums that have made it into IB one way or another and things were particularly dry last week and I think I've emailed most if not all the alums, so as late as this is I think I'm going to have to reach out to non-alums as well. I'm probably kind of fucked given how late my networking efforts started (started in like mid/late Feb), but I can't just quit now you know?

I've heard the general tip of casting a wide net and finding commonality, but how do you actually find these people? my first thought is to type "investment banking analyst" on the search bar, and skip like 10 pages to skip over all the target kids, find an analyst or associate that graduated from non-target, then send out an email where our commonality is that we're both non-targets.

thing is what if they're actually a "semi-target" and I end up messing up. I'm sure the "semi-target" list is a huge gray area that's not really clear cos school A will have OCR for banks XYZ, etc. wondering if anyone else faced this problem.

Just wanted general advice on how non-targets network with other people on linkedin. How to find them on linkedin, how much to curate your template person-to-person (just 1-2 lines?), sample email format, etc.

Umm don’t say you’re both non target? Just email like you regularly would with your school alumni. At this point it’s a numbers game because the response rate from other school alumni will be pretty low.

Noted. so I have to find some other commonality? what if I can't? what does a rough draft of an email I'd send to a non-alum look like? cos right now, what I send to alums contain something along the lines of "I'm very interested in a career in investment banking, and I saw that you were a fellow [school mascot] and thought I'd reach out."

yea ive thought about how my emails can be interpreted that way. funny to actually see someone interpret it that way tho lol.

but i was hoping theyd take it more as "im in the position you were once in and want to get into IB coming from a non-target"

i suck at phrasing. or maybe using non-target as the commonality is simply not the move.

any help would be appreciated.
