Next Steps for Future in Hedge Funds

Hey everyone, I'm going to make this as short and simple as possible. I'm about to be a freshman in undergrad college starting in the fall of this year and I will be attending either a non-target or very low semi-target college. What should I start doing from the time I enter college to ensure I am able to secure a good paying buy-side job particularly in the hedge fund field (I'm aiming for portfolio manager, and I'm aware of how difficult it is) 5-15 years after graduating?

  1. First and foremost, should I try transferring to another school after my freshman year (i.e top LACs as an econ. major, or other top schools with top ranked business schools that have tons of big name OCRs as a Finance major)? Which schools would you guys recommend trying to transfer to?
  2. What types of classes should I take to get the most out of my degree? Any suggestions of clubs/organizations I should join to increase my chances of connecting with reps. from big companies or alumnus? Frats?
  3. What type of internships should I try to secure during the summers of my college years? (something along the IB, AM or WM analyst/consultant or some other type of position?)
  4. Is it worth doing an MBA right after my undergrad to increase my qualifications and perhaps reduce the amount of time it would take to get to where I would like to be?

If anyone could recommend some kind of "game plan" I should try and follow or has personal experience/has been in a similar situation, I would really appreciate your input. Thank you guys in advance!

my opinion: 1) transfer freshman year to HYPS if possible 2) internship in IB/Equity Research/ST/AM as big name as possible. 3) take Accounting and Econ and Math/CS courses if possible 4)join the best finance club in school if possible though that won’t matter much

got it thanks for the info! if I don't ending getting admitted to HYPS (which will most likely be the case), would you recommend any semi-targets that have OCRs and good outreach to NYC?
