NFL Trades

This is a trade, just not the kind some of us do:

Not sure I get the logic on the possible McNabb trade, someone please explain:

-How is it a good deal for an unproven college player (first round draft pick) to be traded for a guy like Donovan McNabb?

Obviously there is a piece to the equation ($, etc) I'm not getting.

McNabb is getting old, really struggles in the red zone, crumbles under pressure. About half of the philly fans despise him. I think the eagles management think Kolb is just about ready to take over and see a lot of promise in him. I'm not sure who's gonna want McNabb and give up a few draft picks. The most obvious choice is the Cardinals because Leinart is mediocre at best.

They have Kolb (who many consider the future of the franchise) and Vick. It's an issue of having too many at the same position. Furthermore McNabb is only under contract for one more year, thus he will be eligible for FA if you don't renegotiate which means you get nothing. He's also due a bonus in May (I think Vick might also)... so it makes sense to get rid of at least one of them, particularly soon if they are going to do it.

Personally, I think the Eagles would be making a huge mistake to trade Mcnabb for a high draft pick(s). Mcnabb, despite being 33 years old, injury prone, shaky in the red zone, and unable to win a big game, is still one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. I would go as far as saying he is still a top 10 QB in the NFL. Why take the risk of starting Kolb now while Mcnabb is still a viable option?

It's almost like a Favre situation, in that at some point you need to start playing your quarterback of the future, both to get him experience, and to also ensure that he doesn't go elsewhere. As a native of Philadelphia, I have had both joy and frustration with McNabb, and I appreciate all he has done, but it is time to move forward and try to get something of value for him (like a draft pick for lineman).

This is the classic case of a team that's obviously going nowhere. Certain teams get in a situation like this where they are quasi-good, but clearly not going anywhere. This is the worst situation to be in for a sports team as you can't really justify rebuilding because you are kind of in contention every year, but you're not anywhere near a championship and you wind up with undesrirable draft position.

When a team is like this for so long it gets so stagnant and stale that it finally becomes time for a change. Usually the coach or quarterback has to go. In the Eagles case, you have a decent quarterback who's about as good as the team is, not even close to that elite or very good level but good enough that it's hard to justify replacing him. Same thing with the coach, who might even be worse than the quarterback. It's a dysfunctional situation.

This team needs a breath of fresh air and, frankly, they'd probably be better served if both the coach and quarterback went. They know where their ceiling is with this coach and this quarterback, with new blood at least there's some uncertaintly as to where that ceiling is. The risk of failure is a risk worth taking because there really is no upside on this track.

All of the above, plus money. McNabb makes way, way more than what they will pay a late first rounder or second rounder.

Also: McNabb has pissed a lot of people off over the years. The final straw may have been his critical comments about the Eagles receiver corps.

All makes sense. I guess I'm getting at the viability of a first rounder becoming a superstar. There are so many draft busts that this trade is hard to justify, but obviously a lot of people who know the business think it makes sense. Thoughts?
