Off-Cycle internships in London

So I've been accepted for a second tier MSc in finance in London, which places relatively well in London IB. I talked to career centre and they were optimistic about getting a SA role, but told me it's up to me to earn FT, which is only fair.

They essentially suggested that I focus on getting a SA internship first, then do off-cycle in case I don't receive an offer right away(can guess because I have basically no related work experience) then hope to get a FT offer by the summer intake. Based on your experiences, is this route doable? do firms accept students for Off-Cycle internships more easily? I appreciate your help.

Its harder to get an OC, so they expect better quality of people / with more experience, which usually leads to a higher conversion rate

The number of positions are far far fewer and the mix of people tends to be slightly different with the age demographic being older due to it largely being composed of students from Continental Europe on two year masters

Yes, if you are a penultimate year student you should focus on summer internship programmes as this is the easiest way in. If you get a summer but don't convert, and it's your last year, go for an OC.

Okay so usually last year students would go for an OC, but in some cases you can apply for SA, check with the banks because some don't care if you are penultimate or final year. In general, if you can, go SA; if you can't, go OC. The only "strange" OC is Credit Suisse's Autumn internship which is for last year students, the others are clearly labeled OC.
