Oil & Gas trading
Hello guys, I am an undergraduate student, who started yesterday his Msc in Corporate Finance. I have great passion for financial markets, and in particular for the energy one. So, one day, I'd like to become a physical trader of crude oil. How do you suggest to build a resumé in order to find a job/internship in this field?
I just applyed for a summer internship in Baker Hughes for a positision in finance/supply chain/sales desks. Now I have to face up a video-interview with Hireview. Do you think it would be a good start to do an internship in this company, even if the role is not directly related to trading?
I want to shoot you straight - it's my opinion that working at Baker Hughes would not be remotely helpful. I would try to spend some time educating yourself on what physical traders do and from there you should be able to answer why it is likely not a great start. Coarse analogy, but it's roughly the equivalent of working at a company that develops ATM security software because you want to go into investment banking.
I would really encourage you to try to read around these boards more - there is a lot of decent information on here that once it is all combed through will at least put you in a better position to ask good questions and increase the quality of information on the boards. Lots of people on here are really helpful, but most want to see that you spent some of your own time trying to understand the high level basics of the industry you suggest you're interested in learning more about.
I suppose my question would be - how do YOU think a role at Baker Hughes could be helpful in building a career in trading? Disclaimer that when I say I don't think it will be helpful, that's my opinion - you might be seeing something in it that I'm completely missing.
Hi index , thank you for the answer. I thought that an internship in BHGE could be a good start just because, as I read many times in this forum, to pursue a career in the Oil&Gas physical trading desk is very important to understand the business itself. So I was convinced that an internship of 6 month, related to a company that works in the industry and defines itself like a "fullstream" company, would have help me to get a good knowledge and insight about the fuctioning of the O&G industry. That's the why I applied for, but if you are telling me that it is not even remotely helpful, maybe I have to riconsider my opinion toward this internship.
Most common route iirc is scheduler for a few years ==> Trader
Or risk analyst can be good to get your foot in the door.
