Orbis Investments - Any Info?
Wondering if anyone has any info on Orbis' prestige, reputation within the industry. Their founder Allan Gray seemed to be an incredible investor and found an article by Forbes in 2000 talking about how they were the best performing fund at the time as per S&P. Recent year's performance hasn't been as great, but everyone who's there seems to have been there for a while with high AUM/head.
Wondering if anyone has any insights on starting a career here vs a more well known brand like Wellington/Fidelity/T Rowe etc...

In general, it's a great firm, no surprise that few have heard of them especially at the junior level (appears to me that they take pride in not marketing themselves to those outside the industry and rather let performance speak for themselves).
Of course with a value bias, recent years haven't been as great but long-term track record is very impressive performance-wise. They have a very focused contrarian and value based approach to investing so it can be quite niche and catered towards people with a similar investment mindset.
Heard that the firm is run more like a hedge fund rather than your typical LO AMs. Juniors are given tons of responsibility and autonomy (paper portfolios from what i gather?). Comp is higher than the AMs you mentioned especially at junior level.
In my view, I would definitely take Orbis if I buy into the similar investment philosophy. If not, I would still think it's the better bet especially at a junior level.
People r not making bonuses there for a while. Look at their performance and fee structure. Im surprised they are still around tbh.
