pdf or word resume?
pdf is my default but it occurred to me that I may be screening myself out of searches by a large number of hack headhunters and search engines that only process .doc files .... thoughts?

PDF is definitely the way to go. It ensures everyone will be viewing the exact same thing.
Not sure where you are uploading your resume where "hack headhunters and search engines" might be looking for it, but you won't find any legit jobs through that.
Hahaha exactly. If you apply to a company, you intend that company to see your resume, not anyone else.
pdf !
.doc especially if you plan on interviewing in NYC IBD/PE/HF
could anyone saying .doc explain the reasoning? thanks
Coming from Europe, I was used to use PDF but almost every HH ask now for a .doc
I am assuming that they use a research tool.
On a side note, I personaly prefer a Word document to see if there is any "formating fantasy" that you can't see in a PDF. It was useful to recruit SA and to see who can or can't make a proper and consistant word document.
I did NYC IB and used PDF (got offer). I found that every now and then, there would be a glitch in .doc formatting on the other end. To ensure the reader is viewing the same thing you are, I would go with PDF.
PDF....I can't tell you how annoyed I get when I have to forward the resume to my gmail acct to have it converted. But then again...the only thing I have on this computer is the trading platform.
Looks like everyone is split down the middle. I am also unsure of which format to submit to companies.
If you polled the board, it wouldn't be close to an even split - PDF would win convincingly. It just makes sense to be able to guarantee a consistent presentation of the resume. Wanting to see how people formatted their essays in Word is incredibly anal and (hopefully) a very rare occurrence.
Have both versions on hand. But submit as a PDF - know of recruiters who couldn't open a word resume (different version file) and they automatically rejected the applicants (it's bad luck)

I've seen a couple of NY recruiting websites that only allow you to upload .doc - but if I were emailing my resume to someone I'd definitely go with PDF.
PDF preserves all formatting. Thats all you have to know. PDF it.
Another vote for PDF. I have received for various reasons many of my friend's resumes which are in .doc, and was surprised at how many showed up on my or the school computers with formatting differences and that dreaded one line on the second page.
pdf. or doc. what is the standard for a resume drop? (Originally Posted: 08/20/2007)
I'm not sure what I should send it as?...thanks
i've received a resume in xls format before..
The resume drop at my school required .doc
Make sure you use the preview function for stuff like this as it changes the placement of your words.
For other situations, like if someone asks me to mail my resume, I sent it as a .pdf
pdf is great because you typically don't have to worry about your formatting being screwed up because of some subtle Word settings or anything I think there used to be sort of a discussion on whether one was more or less appropriate because not everyone necessarily would have applications to read all of these various files but nowadays that shouldn't be an issue and if someone reading your resume has a strong enough preference then they should let you know before hand what they expect. realistically, everyone's got a word processor and adobe so its not of the utmost importance unless the receiver specifies what they want
I like to send a handwritten copy on the back of a Jersey diner placemat and then I seal the envelope with a kiss.
If emailing resume, I always think that a PDF file looks more professional.
agree with ToBankorNotToBank send resume as pdf.
i hate it when people want the source file. it is annoying because it prohibits you from using programs outside the microsoft suite (gasp!).
pdf's all the way! :o)
pdf is the way to go
I think .doc is the standard, pdfs are nicer though.
DOC is NOT the standard. Always email resumes in PDF format.
^^^how do you create your own adobe pdf file? is there a program that allows you to do this? thanks
Open the document you want to create a PDF out of. Hit control + P. Select "Print to File" instead of a printer. It has been awhile, i think this will get you there. If not, use your school's scanner.
there is a freeware app called cutepdf. creates a "printer" which creates PDFs.
nice app.
adobe pro can covert word files into PDF's. Just download it if you don't want to buy it.
