is someone upset because no one replied to their networking efforts.....

Okay, I have family over, and they're kinda annoying me so I had to take a break for a minute. Also, I'm kinda already drunk - so i'm gonna keep this short and sweet.

You're a fuckin idiot - linkedin works.

Febreeze:
You're a fuckin idiot - linkedin works.

I've only been actively using LinkedIn for a couple weeks and I've already had several analysts and associates at small funds and boutiques agree me to meet up for coffee (after a few back and forth InMail messages) and offer to deliver my resume to hiring managers.

LMAO you must be SO shitty at networking or are so awkward in emails (i dnt knw who you can be awkward in emails/messages, but you must be) or a dull person

i personally got my FT offer and previous internships SOLELY through networking, hard-work, luck and WSO (but mainly networking through LINKEDIN!!!!!!!!!!!)

i really feel bad for you if you dont know how to use linkedin to talk to people coldly. you should learn how to be witty/keep up a convo with a stranger. its a great life skill to have let alone a way to network.

merry christmas too :)

" HR will check to make sure you are competent enough to maintain a professional online presence and that it lines up with the resume you give them"

Dude i know plenty of people that dont use linkedin that are employed at very respectable firms and those that DO have linkedin and is well maintained and dont get interviews/offers

its as correlated as you are making it seem by HR checking it

just delete this thread now, lol so pointless

LinkedIn does and can work...

But if you think that its largely beneficial to the regular employee (like you and me), than you are sadly mistaken-

LinkedIn is a headhunters/HR/Employee fact checkers wet dream. But if you are smart and nimble, it can work for you...

"Sounds to me like you guys a couple of bookies."

I think it can be an effective tool for finding the names of analysts/associates at firms that may have gone to your school or a similar school (this is if you are in the process of looking for a FT or SA gig). I've used it a few times for this and then looked up email formats on WSO. Has gotten me a few phone chats with analysts at firms I otherwise had 'in' at.

That said, I don't see much use in having a linkedin profile while in college/'connecting' with interviewers and other people. Many don't check their profiles, and it seems a bit weird to me.

If you don't think LinkedIn is useful for networking, you aren't doing it right.

thank you. this. all my internships/IB interviews/FT-offer was heavily attributed to networking through linkedin...especially the ones that were NOT through OCR.

I guess things are really different in the US. You can get an internship or job offer from LinkedIn? When I was cold-calling back in my freshman year, one alumni in Morgan Stanley kindly replied saying that "your time is best spent on studying in the library. Usually, these cold-calling/emailing won't do you any good here."

you dont get the job by simply using linkedin...you CONNECT with people on linkedin, email them, meet them, speak on the phone with them, blow them..etc what have you..and then if you're sharp and not awkward it can usually lead to an interview or referral and then an offer

its not simply like adding a contact, forwarding a resume and they reply back saying you are hired. such a pointless thread god

When used properly, LinkedIn is one of the more powerful networks you can tap into. I actually think most people under-utilize the site. I've cold emailed several higher-ups and many have responded back. This is purely anecdotal in terms of how effective LinkedIn is, but like many on here have said, you have to do it the right way - and the big key here is to send out the right, professionally-formatted email.

And what I always say to others is that you really have nothing to lose. You have everything to gain should it work (e.g., interviews).

The main point of this post was that LinkedIn connections don’t make you connected. Same thing as having 1,000 Facebook friends and sitting at home alone every Saturday night.

Matthias:
1) Use LinkedIn to find names of people in desired industry/firm 2) Use firm email format to send networking email 3) ????? 4) Profit
^ I failed to mention this. This HAS worked for me. I’ve established a handful of quality connections this way. But never did I mention that I discovered them on LinkedIn.

AnalystMonkey2769 … Really? I meet people through people, at bars, golf courses and on boats. Mr. eHarmony here seemed to take offense to my low opinion of the online connection hunting. And to the HR comment, after multiple interviews (phone, formal and informational) the interviewers have viewed my LinkedIn. And based on your personal attack at me for criticizing your precious LinkedIn, I would say you are the dull, unemployed and probably friendless person in this thread. Next time you see “Excellent written communication and people skills REQUIRED” on a job app… Go ahead and DQ yourself from that candidate pool.

Make opportunities. Not excuses.

Actually far from it. but this is just an online forum, if you feel so inclined to attack an anonymous user on the website go ahead, it really doesnt affect me at all lol. i got my FT offer and know how to use linkedin for myself, have a good social life, family and friends and im happy. only thing im upset about is that im actually taking time to respond to your attack hahaha...

im not at a point yet in my life where i know enough ppl in finance to go golfing with them or hang out with them on boats, but hopefully one day i can be. much love

While I agree OP is very misguided, I THINK something he said was true. You shouldn't use LinkedIn to connect with random MDs out of the blue and send them messages over that? I've never personally done it, but it just seems overbearing and most professionals don't check it that often. Cold Connecting, coined a new term.

LinkedIn has litterally given me 90% of my contacts. I just use it as a person google. I wouldnt have found any alumni without it being from a non-target. Plus, large firms don't usually have "Our Team" pages with everyone's name. So boom, ya plug the fuckin company name and a radius in that bitch and sha bang, you got some contacts to cold email. I will, however, connect with them after I email them and speak with them.

What if they asked where you found their contact details from?
you lie, never tell the truth, say you asked their mother or the CEO of their bank

I've posted about this before, how do you respond to the "How did you get my email?" question? Someone said you should ignore it and just continue on with whatever else they said. One guy suggested if thats all they really said, theres no hope and don't even bother. Or just make up some excuse that isn't the truth, you hunted them down and plugged their name into a known email format. I just got an email today where she asked me how i got her email, she said "no big deal, just curious" and then went on to respond to what i said. So i think it's mostly a curiousity thing, not like they think your a creeper. That being said, i still don't know how to respond haha.

Falcon:
My only question is this, do some of you guys add random people and than message them?

Even though some might say not to, i have done it plenty of times, but i made sure they were junior people being 1st 2nd or 3rd year analysts and wouldnt do this randomly to a VP or MD or senior associate (unless they are in charge or recruiting and you can say i was told you were in charge of recruitment etc) or if i have a mutual characteristic between us, always helped to break the ice- like alumni, same fraternity, same previous internship etc.

other than that its a hit or miss type thing. some might say NOT to do it, but its worked for me. just be extra extra polite and always say please and thank you and "if you have time i would love to speak with you regarding x and y.......And if not I completely understand as well. Thank you for your consideration in advance" etc.
