Private Equity / iBanking in Florida

For those who currently work in the field in Florida, or know much about it, is there a realistic possibility for a Florida State graduate with a semi-decent GPA (3.25) to get a job at a small investment banker PE firm in Florida. I already have private equity internship experience but I was wondering if I should even bother pursuing anything in Florida, seems a lot more competitive. I really prefer to stay in FL though.

Thoughts?

Unfortunately, none that I know of.

HIG Capital is the biggest player in the space, but I don't know of them having a dedicated intern class. Coming from SoFlo, I'm sure you're well aware that most of the finance industry is concentrated around PWM and HFs. There are some LatAm teams with the BB's based down there, but those are pretty much the only coverage group that you'll find.

Two recommendations.

A. Summer in NYC with one of the BBs. Aside from the LatAm guys, most banks have a Corporate Banking presence in Miami. Having BB IBD experience on your resume will be impressive, and you can easily apply for CB or analyst positions in PE. As in the case with most banks, you can always move from NYC -> "Satellite City" but this equation is not transitive. This way if you decide to do IB/PE in NYC instead of MIA you won't shoot yourself in the foot.

B. Ask some of the PE shops about interning. Most of the smaller guys won't advertise for an intern, but it is possible that they'll take one on for the summer. The downside to this approach is your experience will be no where what you can get at a larger PE/IBD division. Another thing to keep in mind is aside from HIG, most of these PE guys are relatively small, so they'll be looking for more experienced FT hires then what a SA can bring to the table.

if they're anything like my firm, it's not IB. what a lot of these firms will do is have their top PWM branches on their website as locations, but really there might be like one MD who works from home there, no recruiting, nothing like that. for example, there's a small beach town not too far from me with to MD's from our bond desk sitting in a PWM office. they do it because they can, not because there's any other presence there.

OP, if you're really curious, see what firms state on their website that they have offices in Miami/Boca, etc. then just cold call the number online to see if you can get an informational interview with the manager the next time you're home.
