Private Equity Operational Consulting

Starting entry level at a Tier 2/3 consulting firm in a few weeks (eg. Deloitte/Accenture). My ultimate goal is to work for 2/3 years---->M7 MBA---->MBB---->PE portfolio consulting (eg. KKR Capstone/TPG ops group/Bain Cap portfolio group/Blackstone??....likely forgetting a few others)

Does anyone have any information on these groups and the way they hire (entry level/mid level/senior level)? what can I do to give me the best shot at an interview? these groups are relatively small/new and I want to get a feel for my chances on getting in through this particular route in case it's hopeless and i should just choose to go BB IBD instead(really want to avoid working Fortune 500 middle management at all costs). I've done LinkedIn searches and I've seen both pre and post-MBA MBB consultants make this jump.

If anyone has any information on these groups (qualifications/ how to break in/ comp/lifestyle/travel/promotion and career progression/exits) I would be very appreciative. I've been a passive user on this site all throughout my entire undergraduate career but curiosity has finally driven me to actually post on here.

That path is going to be very, very difficult. Those types of groups really rarely make hires from post-MBA consultants.

Those groups tend to mostly hire pre-MBA (mostly MBB) or directly coming out of HSW, and then promote from within. They generally have more folks trying to get promoted than spots at the next level at every rung of the ladder, so very hard to break in at more senior levels.

Only exception would be if you have very specific sector/domain knowledge that they're looking to hire where they're missing that from their current bench. Ex. if they have a flood of retail people leave, they might try to find a MBB Principal with a lot of retail expereince.

Very solid advice and I appreciate the response. In your personal opinion, what would be the best way in my situation? Please be brutally honest. Out of HSW? assuming i could even get in....would i even get an interview? LinkedIn searches and online profiles on these firm's website seem to indicate a large amount of post mba MBB and industry vets backgrounds get hired into these groups. sorry for all the questions but it seems like there is little to no information on this anywhere

I would take a step back and remind yourself that PE ops consulting is an oddly specific end-all, be-all goal. I'm sure there are elements of that job that are really attractive to you, but there are several more attainable jobs out there that offer many of those same elements.

If this is the case, that's news to me. Again, I think it's rare to be hired into these groups at the post-MBA level unless you have a really specific and valuable skillset that these groups are looking for.

The reason there's no information on this is that these are small groups. It's not like MBB or BB banks where they hire hundreds of kids every year, so it's a really standardized process that's easy to get information on. This is a very specific niche.
