Prop Trading Firm : Stay put for now or make a move?
Been working in prop trading as a software engineer for 3 years now (7 years total software engineering experience). I enjoy the work and have a good relationship going with management but also curious about what opportunities I might be missing out on too. I search job postings online a lot and research salaries/reviews for other prop trading firms. I've concluded that I'm making a salary/bonus that is below market for my experience level and that it wouldn't be difficult to find something where I am closer to the market (it would just be a matter of finding the time to update my resume and do interviews again). At the same time though, I'm afraid of making the wrong move and ending up at a worse position somewhere else (not to mention the pain of getting used to a new code base but maybe won't be as bad now that I have experience in this field). Is 3 years not enough time? I've certainly learned a hell of a lot about software and trading since I started here but it might still look like I'm just a job hopper.
Check your contract with your current firm. There could be a non-compete clause that could keep you of the industry for 12 months. Is there anyway you could ask your bosses for a raise?
Yeah, I think we have some sort of non-compete clause, but what's weird is that I've seen other people in this company move on to other trading firms. That's another thing that has always been confusing for me.
