Q&A: Jaded analyst about to hit 1 year. I promise I won't be like the recruiters who sold me on one thing and delivered another.
Hi WSO - I've used this forum in the past and found it useful, so here's my chance to give back. I'm about to hit one year at Accenture, and it's been grueling and testing work environment. I got roped into a project that barely aligned to what my interests were (big surprise there), and have unfortunately been stuck on the same client since I joined. I've had half a foot out the door for the past few months now, and have interviewed at a startup that I just got rejected from. I have my foot in the door at two other companies, one is a fintech startup that everyone on this forum has heard of, the other is Slalom consulting. I'm an open book. Ask away! :)
I have a movie suggestion mate.
thanks for the rec, any reason why you chose this as a recommendation?
How is it working at Accenture? I am starting as an intern this summer and would love any feedback/tips!
hi Sophia - you might not hear this as an intern (since they'll try to hide all the not so shiny stuff), but as an analyst, I've heard that your time at Accenture can be a mixed bag - meaning that your experience can be dependent on a variety of factors outside of your control (business/people etc). The onus is definitely on you to take your career by the helm and steer it towards where you want to be. In my personal experience I was burnt out from college and didn't have the motivation to be as involved in the company as some of my peers. I'd recommend finding your "niche" even if it's outside of your project (i.e. a meaningful +1). people say you can do anything at Accenture - just don't let that be nothing.
lol sounds like he hates it...
I wouldn't say I necessarily hate it. Like I said - many people say it's a mixed bag, and I often say I got the crumbs. I've learned a lot, and I'm hoping to leverage what I've gained these past twelve months into a more meaningful role, either within Accenture or elsewhere. I have a few interviews lined up and a foot and a half out the door, so here's to happier days :)
What are lessons you learned on how to best reduce unnecessary work and minimize fire drills
good question. I'm not necessarily in a position to do so, but from what I've seen from my higher ups - delegate work that can be delegated. re: avoiding fire drills - delegate to people who can be trusted (i.e. people you've had good working experiences in the past). when this isn't possible, hunker down and get ready for some eye strain and typing.
Thanks for the Ask Me Anything offer -- great to learn from others! I'll PM you since my question is not really mainstream consulting...
What's the culture like? Would you consider your analyst class tight-knit?
How is/was Slalom?
