RBS Global Portfolio?
Hi guys,
Does anyone know anything about Global Portfolio under Global Banking (essentially IBD) of RBS?
It's job seems to be mainly assessing the risk posed by the deals that the bank carries out, but I'm not too sure.
Any help with what they actually do, hours per week, relevant skills gained, as well as exit ops (this is for an internship) would be great.
Thanks
im guessing extensive hours. Not as aggressive as TMT, energy, etc... desks.
Since your on a macro level, Im guessing what you just explained is what it is. Global is good, but i would compare that to BlackRock client/customer support in terms of deals and review.
I might be wrong about this, but RBS is a good place to be, and IBD is also good.
I don't think your exit ops are as great as they could be though.
Would I be able to gain any modeling/deal experience at all? How is this role different to risk management?
You will definitely get some time on excel.
You might be pulling a lot of information, juggling it around, etc...
I'm not sure about modeling.
I think you should contact the hiring manager and talk about this with him so your completely cleared.
Thanks for your input, I'll definitely speak to my hiring manager when I get the chance.
What would you say my chances are for leveraging this summer experience to FT in M&A be? Do firms look exclusively for M&A experience?
Hmmmm... M&A firms are either very specific or looking for someone who is very random/unique. This is assuming that the candidate has EVERYTHING else.
I would say your chances are good, but you gotta blow the door off the house here....
This is what you have to do: -Network Network Network.. meet A LOT of people and make a good impression in general, socially. People don't want to be working with someone they don't know personally fit for the job. -Specifically figure out how the entire M&A division works in your firm. Who sits where... Who is who... How do they hire... etc... How a project is pushed through the business pipeline. -You will probably get a mentor, half way through the internship mention to your mentor you want M&A. If they are good mentors, they will tell you exactly what to do. -EXPRESS INTEREST towards the end of your internship in M&A. Let everybody know your the rock-star new M&A guy.
You should be squared a way with this info. Let me know if you want anymore explanations.
Thanks a lot for your very helpful recommendations, do you think we can discuss further via private message?
This sounds a lot like risk management to me. It's a middle office role. I don't think the hours will be too intense, and pay would be less than IB (maybe 1/3 of the IB bonuses on analyst/associate level, then base will taper dramatically at VP). In terms of modeling, you look at cash flows and you wouldn't do anything too extensive like M&A or anything too complex.
If this is your only internship opp, I would take it but express a lot of interest in IB while working with bankers. Don't neglect the risk group entirely (still need to nab FT), but get contacts and be sure to let it known you want the front office job opportunity.
