Don't renege. Banking is a small world and word will get out quicker than you think. As long as you're at a BB in HK, you will have similar experiences. No need to take this risk.
Thanks for the suggestion. But does verbal offer count as reneging? I havent signed anything with the first bank at all
You take the risk of burning bridges for sure. I think it is ok to eventually sign with another bank, but if you unfortunately didn't get the return offer, I don't think any other HK bank would take you for full time. A friend of mine had a similar situation where he promised one bank that he would 100% sign if he gets the offer but eventually went to another bank. Sadly he didn't get the return offer at the bank he interned with and now he is struggling to find a job in banking because banking is a small world.
So in short, you can do it but you will be in a bad spot if you did not get that return offer.
Verbal offers aren’t binding, but it’s the “spirit” of what you promised. As others have pointed out, if you don’t get the offer to return and your intention is to be in HK for IB, you could potentially be in a tough spot for FT recruiting (people talk).
It’s SA not FT... and it’s one BB vs another BB, so it’s really not worth the risk.
