Research role at MBB to equity research?
Hi all,
After 2 years of research at MBB, is it possible to transition into an equity research position or will an MBA be required?
If you get an MBA, do you still start off as an associate for equity research or do you enter in as an analyst?
Thanks!
Hey BobTheBaker! I am doing TMT research. Only reason I ask is because I am doing industry research that doesn't deal with valuation / financial modeling. It's more of a "technical" role with very little financial knowledge needed. It's also a back office position vs. an actual consulting gig which would have a lot more exit ops.
How easy would it be to transition? Preferably, would love to go right into ER rather than breaking in via MBA route. What are your thoughts?
I'd say that if you can sell your industry experience and don't limit your options (either location or "prestige" of the bank) then networking should be able to get you in. You're in pretty good shape seeing as you already have some industry knowledge. I'd learn some modeling (you can find paid and/or free materials that will help you - some right on this site) and learn how to pitch a stock.
Why do you want to enter a contracting industry?
What do you mean? Do you think there will be big changes to ER in the next 5 years? I understand it isn't as lucrative as it once was before but research is what I've always loved. Just want to do some more financial modeling.
