Rutgers Business School
How is Rutgers Business School (part-time) viewed in finance/banking? I know NYU is clearly the way to go if you're going part-time in the NYC area, but Rutgers appears to be a pretty decent alternative as a backup plan given the increased applicant competition these days. What does everyone think?
Wharton / Chicago / Harvard / Columbia / Stanford and perharps three or four more. Anything else is worthless.
More like ~10 more. But look into full-time.
Off the top of my head: Northwestern Michigan Duke MIT Cornell Dartmouth NYU Indiana Darden
All send to NYC, and are obviously very strong regionally. But the strongest clearly are the schools julns listed.
what about Anderson and Haas?
clearly those are the best, I don't disagree. But if you were to limit yourself to the tri-state area and part-time degrees only, what would be your rankings?
NYU, fordham, baruch, rutgers...???
work for the same company in the same job? i'm questioning why you'd like to do a part time MBA because prestige matters slightly less if you're not interested in the on campus recruiting.
I'm not sure what I want to do afterwards yet. Part-time just appears to be the better solution for me as going full-time would just be too expensive and I don't want to give up 2 years worth of income. And if you're going just to get the degree to be eligible for advanced jobs later in life, would it really matter if you went part-time somewhere other than NYU?
Its useless. Go to one of the top schools other users have mentioned or don't go at all. The only exception is if you are currently where you want to be and your firm requires ANY mba to rise up. Even then, I would retake GMATs and try again. Other than that you might as well just donate your tuition money to charity and make 0.001% of a difference somewhere rather than 0%.

There is a huge distinction between banking and other finance jobs. For banking, you really should target the top 15. Only consider schools like Rutgers or Penn State if you would be happy with corporate finance, general management, Big 4 advisory or middle market lending for a commercial bank like PNC.
I really don’t think PT MBA/EMBA (except for wharton, which costs $150K & perhaps a few others) programs are suitable for career changers because 1) you don’t get an internship and 2) you generally don’t get full/any access to on campus recruiting.
Rutgers PT MBA is a good option for an engineer at Lockheed Martin who wants to move into management. It is an awful option for someone targeting a capital markets position
Brilliant post!

What are the prospects coming from RU B school? I hear it gets it's fair share of opportunities and for the money, it sounds attractive. Thoughts?
RBS would have a much different career impact if it wasn't located in nj, where there are tons and tons of ivy league schools and top programs in the area. thus there is no point in going with the attempts of getting on wall street because banks in NYC area can choose from Americas finest students,
...however i have heard that some graduates have gotten into back office BB associate positions...like treasury/operations/accounting or something. but NOT front office S&T/IB/ECM/WM
Look up back office to front office. Probably similar procedure, odds, and amount of effort in landing an attractive position...except you already used up your MBA lifeline.
What If you've done an analyst program at a BB an choose RU to save money?
If you did 2 years at a BB I don't think you'd worry about saving that incremtal cost that comes with a top tier b-school. You will probably want the best for your future/career. You got that far? Why half ass it now and compromise all of the progress you've made? Check the school rankings, job placement stats, and average first year salaries. There is no contest.
If you want to study high-end mathematics at a graduate level then Rutgers is the place to be. If you want to see an economically effecient return on your investment for business school then stick with the top 25, if not the top 10.
On an aside: I went to their open house just to hear them out and I asked the guy running the program what AM / ER / IBD recruiting realistically looked like. He laughed and started busting my balls in front of the entire group (200+ people) for wanting to "talk the Wall Street talk", to which I replied "I already work there".......and he got very embarrassed and shut his mouth. Later on when he calmed down, he said that finance isn't the focus of Rutgers and they don't want it to be, and that I would be better off finding a way into NYU or Columbia.
Great Info. Puts things in prospective. Thanks a lot.
MBA is all about building a pedigree...
Personally I wouldn't go to any school out of the top 15 or so
"Finance is not the focus at Rutgers" just means "we suck and are not competitive, but don't want to admit it".
Please don't go to Rutgers.
This is coming from someone at Rutgers.
if you come here, there are enough people to help you out if you really stand out. But I'd recommend you don't go through this
I went to Rutgers - am IBD at a BB now. Don't go to Rutgers for your MBA.
Thanks for all the great answers and anecdotes.
