Shell Graduate Trading

I'm a final year student current applying to physical oil trading graduate schemes. I've seen lots of great discussion on here regarding Shell TDP vs BP TDP. However looking at the requirements for Shell TDP they seem to be looking for 3-5 years of experience, while BP TDP is a graduate programme.

Can you apply to Shell TDP as a graduate? I only have 1 year of relevant work experience. Shell do offer graduate schemes, but none of them see to be trading related. Do people generally go for graduate roles in non-trading departments, then apply internally for the TDP?

Thanks for the help.

There are 3 majors that run TDPs (BP, Shell, P66) each is different in what they are looking for in candidates and their expectations of graduates of the program.  As Brian Hunter (great nod btw) mentioned above, Shell prefers candidates w/ 3-5 years experience typically these are ppl that come from FT roles either internally or at other shops.  BP's main TDP program is for kids just out of school (mostly undergrad). P66's program is also for kids straight out of school.

To answer your question, sure apply it's a free option but handicap your odds appropriately.  In general the further away you work from trading the harder it is to break into trading.  For example, if you work FP&A and another candidate works Risk, who do you think is more likely to get into a TDP?

There are a few majors with official TDPs: Shell’s and BP’s are the more commonly discussed. BP’s TDP accept undergrads straight out of school whereas Shell’s does not.

What Shell offers to undergrads is the Shell Graduate Programme (SGP) which typically has roles that may have connections to Front Office Trading (e.g. as an LNG trading analyst or Commercial Operator) but its not really designed as a trader pipeline programme with the conventional rotations (e.g. Risk/Ops). How close your role is to Trading is also highly dependent on luck and what opportunities are available however.

On exiting the graduate programme (2-3 years), there is then an option to apply internally for the Shell TDP.
