Should I drop out for a potential job?
I would like some advice about a potential opportunity. I am currently enrolled in a top MSF program on the east coast and am trying to get into consulting. I have an interview next week with an MBB consulting firm but was rejected from the other 2. Through a friend, I have an opportunity to intern at a small hedge fund in Los Angeles which has the potential to turn into a full time permanent position. However, I would need to drop out of school, and would have limited options if the hedge fund doesn't work out. What should I do?
I think this needs to be an open discussion with the hiring manager. Open up a dialogue on terms of the internship and possible FT conversion. Also, discuss the possibility of interning and school if they are interested in you having a MSF.
Or you could also delay the start date if possible.
So, he hinted strongly that with good performance the internship would become FT. He said they need the intern to be in the office physically so remote work is out of the question unfortunately. Didn't push for more details since I didn't want to make him uncomfortable. But I recently struck out with all the consulting firms I applied to so currently really uncertain about my future and what this program can even provide me...
I dont like the idea of dropping out of school for an internship but it all depends.
If they really like you, there's always common ground for negotiation. You can also dm and ask reputable HF people on this site regarding that shop, they may provide better advice
Its a new shop that opened this year so don't think there's a lot of info on it. I don't want to drop out either but the only reason I am attending this program is to get that "target" school on my resume so I could gun for those jobs... I was just rejected by MBB and a couple of other consulting firms so honestly, my future is pretty uncertain and I'm unsure of what this program can still provide me with.
This could backfire in many ways. Say you drop-out to take the job, and then in the interim, the HF blows up (which is completely possible). Then your out of a job AND you dropped out of school
This is honestly my biggest worry and the reason I haven't pulled the trigger. However, on the other hand, the only reason I came here was to get that target school brand and gun for MBB and I was just rejected by all of them so I don't know what this program has to offer me anymore other than a great education which I don't really care for since that doesn't pay the bills...
I wouldn’t drop out just for an internship.
You will get FT offers post graduate anyways
the problem is, I don't think I will. At least not anything in the consulting or banking world...
I’m sorry but why do you think you will get no offers?
Just because you don’t have it lined up doesn’t mean you’re fucked
Sounds like they need some cheap bodies to throw at a short term problem. You're likely to get fucked at the end, I'd stay in school.
He did hint that the position could turn FT if they like me but thats a huge risk
In my opinion, you're being sold a dream. If you can get him to put concrete metrics in writing, he might not be lying. Just be careful.
