Studying cryptocurrency: great idea or waste of time?
Hi everyone,
I am currently studying in a Business School and I wanted to know if you think it is worth to spend time learning cryptocurrencies and everything around (blockchain, bitcoin...). This is something we won’t study at school and I thought it could maybe be interesting to precisely figure out how it works. Do you think cryptocurrencies will become more and more important in the future and do you think it’s a good investment to spend hours studying the matter?
Thanks
If you have the time and are thinking about investing in it go for it it's definitely something that seems to be gaining traction
I would not make it a primary focus, but it seems like a good idea to familiarize with. Have you looked into ICO's at all? Kik is apparently planning on doing one (I have never used Kik but saw something about it at work). Having an understanding of a more niche market is never a bad idea.
Thank you very much for your answers guys. I have only had a glance at ICO, why? What's your point?
It was merely a suggestion to get familiarized with them.
ICOs are the biggest fucking scams
But do you think cryptocurrency will become a full currency to trade such as the euro or the US dollar in the future? I mean do you think that banks will have cryptocurrency traders like they have currency traders or fixed-income traders? I find it hard to understand what trajectory it will take... Otherwise thanks for your answers, I will just have a deeper look into the field, that can always be useful as you said.
Yes, Yes, $80bn market cap, it's still the beginning... Unless cryptocurrency has no value whatsoever, there wouldn't be idiots dumping cash into the market... It's still a very volatile market, trade/invest at your own discretion. FYI: All hacking incident that happened to cryptocurrencies market is because of the exchange market, NOT on the cryptocurrency itself. I'm probably in the same seat as you, I'm a senior in an undergrad business school too... Bored with summer and school stuff..
"Unless tulips have no value whatsoever, there wouldn't be idiots dumping cash into the market," said every Dutch merchant to their wives.
Considering the impact of the blockchain and the amount of money that one can make I'd say it's worth learning about it
New tech, trends and fads = opportunities for entrepreneurs
There are something like 830 different cryptocurrencies/crypto assets out there right now. About 90% are absolute trash, but the remaining 10% have some serious potential. The whole block chain industry is really starting to gain a lot of traction as major institutions continue to develop block chain applications. (JP Morgan, MasterCard, Santander, Bank of America, BP, CME Group, Microsoft, Intel, Deloitte, UBS, Toyota, Samsung, etc.) It will still be years until this begins to impact your everyday life, but that means now is the ideal time to start learning and investing. A few that I think are particularily noteworthy:
GNT -Planning to become the "AirBnB" of spare computing power
ICN - digital Asset Management platform
ETH - Turing complete block chain, with a huge number of apps currently in development which is driving the current ICO craze. The bulk of developer activity is focused on ETH.
BTC - The largest and most popular crypto that put blockchain technology on the map. Currently the highest market cap by a wide margin. BTC had some scaling issues that were recently resolved (at least in the near term)
What do you think of the Iota concept? Does it solve the scalability issues of the blockchain technology? Why or why not?
Hmm, good point...
I've only briefly looked into IOTA. The "tangle" concept is interesting as are the long term applications. My initial concern is the team's ability to reach their rather lofty goals. It has been on my watch list for awhile, but until it gets closer to reaching some real milestones, I'll just continue to watch their progress.
Thanks.
Blockchain and crypto are without a doubt the future of the industry and to not have at least a baseline knowledge of it is setting yourself up to be left in the dust. I think it's important to even consider cloud computing, smart contracts, and DLT's (distributed ledger technology) impact in industries other than finance as well.
Cryptocurrency is in it's infancy, and some liken current trends of growth to the dotcom bubble. While there's definitely some truth to that as many of these companies launching ICO's are cash grabs and will fail, I still think we are seeing the beginning of a completely new tech that will be widely adopted down the road.
This is only the very beginning for cryptocurrency. It is a micro-fraction of the size it will be in the future. Keep in mind, however, there will only be between 1 and 3 currencies that can be successfully scaled and integrated into the world economy. All other currencies will be irrelevant. So yes, as in any facet of the universe, research is crucial.
Opinion: I suggest reading about IOTA Token.
What do you think about Iota? lol, love to hear some feedback
Monumental gains through cryptos will only be realized long term. I feel as though most posters here are discussing the crypto market with the belief that it is somewhat like an unstable securities market. Considering short term ups and downs, this is not untrue. However, the future of cryptos is vastly different from a securities market.
I will reiterate, only 1-3 crypto "currencies" will prevail for world use.
It was created by the same guys who had a part in the original blockchain technology. BTC and most other cryptos use blockchain. They noticed many huge flaws in the technology, so they created a new underlying protocol to solve those inevitable issues - the Tangle. If you'd like to learn more about the technologies and the numbers, just go read their documentation. Everything is completely transparent and they have all of their math and reasoning available to the public. That way, you can formulate your own opinion.
Cryptocurrencies are more or less ponzi schemses and method for money laundering. No one takes it seriously.

I mine various cryptocurrencies.
I wouldn't devote all my time to crypto unless it is a passion of yours but it is very interesting to me and I am not in B school.
Thank you all for your answers. I don't intend to devote my whole time on it but as you can see, some think it's clearly the future whereas other believe it's a Ponzi scheme. As I'll have quite a buzy year, I didn't know if it was worth to spend time on it. But it seems that it is, so I will at least focus on the main points such as ETH, BTC or IOTA Token. I think it won't be a waste of time!
I think it is very interesting, but as an investment, I am not so sure. It's definitely not a waste of time if you are interested in it.
I also thought so. Till the moment of this artcle reading https://3commas.io/blog/how-to-profit-from-bitcoin-9-things-you-need-to… . The thing is that not all the people realize the elements connected to the right trading. As described.
I'd really suggest for it if you have the time and money to invest. I know many of my friends who are very active in the space and the rewards are huge. however i could see the market is saturating soon (in 3-5 years) though
