I've searched around considerably and not found a very clear account of how easy/difficult getting a summer internship position is in a bulge bracket firm, although there are a smattering of posts already.
Does one require a 4.0 GPA, excellent contacts in the bank, attend a target school, and have strong prior finance experience to get a position?
Or are the standards lower?

You need to check the boxes (and you can check them without having all the things you mentioned), but at the interview you need to stand out.
Interview slots are filled with ivy league educated kids with high GPA's and previous finance experience. At this point you have to stand out by knowing your stuff and getting along with the interviewer.
