I think you'll be fine. Doubt they will do anything to you over some random competition which I don't think is even that important (unless we are talking about something like International Math Olympiad). I'd say just don't lie about it again, and in the rare case that some guy actually notices (again I find it HIGHLY UNLIKELY) just say you slipped your tongue.
Yes, bankers are very detail oriented and will scrub the deets you give them like a comp set. I would send a follow-up ASAP before they start calling your professors
Yes, they do. Investment bankers are extremely detail oriented (you should know this by now) and take even the smallest of lies very seriously. In fact, the reason investment bankers regularly work until 3 AM is because they are cross-checking a trailing list of answers to behavioral questions from the past 10 years.
P.S. Congrats on the offer.
Probably wouldn't have even posted this to be honest - there is a non-zero chance that they see this post lol
No one will check or care, but how do you "go with the flow" and go into a complete lie about your life?
It’s highly unlikely but they could technically fact check anything you say in an interview and they could rescind offers for a lie at any point in the process. They also have the right to fire you for anything you did/said to mislead employees during the interview process. If you said something super awesome and you worked your way up to being an MD before they found out, they could still fire you 10 years after your SA stint.
Some interviewers might be picky enough to write stuff down and fact check you, but this is much more likely if you say you did something huge (like if you were to say you hold a state record in football or that you were a finalist in a big-name competition).
If it’s a local case competition then I wouldn’t be worried. If it’s a pretty famous competition (I could easily google it and see who the finalists were over the past 3 years) then I would be more worried, but it’s still a really slim chance because you got the offer. If a banker wanted to ding you from the process then it would’ve been less of a hassle to ding you earlier.
Also, it would be different if it were your resume. You have to submit your resume - so there’d be written proof that you lied. What you said in an interview? Maybe the interviewer misheard or misunderstood you; impossible to tell unless it was recorded (hint: it wasn’t).
bruh lol, having conducted interviews before, I can't remember half the sht kids told me. We really don't care. We were asked to do interviews and squeezed them in in between getting slammed at the desk. Your interviewer prolly had a billion other things on his mind, before, during, and after your interview lol
If that's the case, how do interviewers even have the headspace to make good decisions regarding the candidates?
Candidates are literally chosen after superdays in the same day or latest next day. It's obviously still fresh in the mind for that brief moment but as soon as the plz fix comments came through or the 50th iteration to the acc dil model SOTP model comes in, you can bet most interviewers are going to forget what just happned and move on with their lives.
OP here, thanks guys. Think I was worrying a little too much
Posting on here about your lie is incredibly dumb. There's a good chance your interviewer didn't think anything of the original answer, and will come onto here and see that you outed yourself.
Even if the comments on here told you it wasn't ok, what were you going to do? Email your interviewer an apology?
God forbid someone else could have benefitted from the question you posted, but thanks for changing it and being a selfish prick :)
I’ll help with that.
OP asked something along the lines of: “I just got a BB IB offer, but at one point in my superday I said I was a finalist for a competition when I wasn’t. I didn’t even mean to say it - it just kind of came out. Should I be worried? Do bankers take detailed notes and check into it later or anything? Should I be worried?”
