Teach For America before Consulting/MBA
Hi all,
Been a reader for a while, but first time poster. A bit of background: I am currently a senior at a no-name state university, and will graduate in a couple of weeks with a 3.99 GPA and majors in Economics & Environmental Studies. Ultimately, I would like to attend a top MBA program and work for an MBB or tier-2 consulting firm, or in a strategy role with a fortune 500 company.
I’m currently considering an offer to join Teach For America, and am curious to hear some thoughts on TFA as a route to my stated goals. Educational equity is something that I’m passionate about and TFA is something that I’m genuinely interested in doing, and I do feel confident that my specific assignment would, on the whole, be beneficial for the kids and that I would not be displacing any local teachers.
I’m confident that I will be able to score 720+ on the GMAT, so I’d love to hear some thoughts on the plausibility of TFA>MBA>Consulting, TFA>Consulting>MBA, or TFA>. . .>MBA>Consulting. As a note, TFA does currently partner with McKinsey, Bain, Deloitte, and EY-Parthenon. Thanks for any feedback!
TFA to MBA to Consulting is a well trodden path. Coming from a no-name undergrad will disadvantage you in this case, so find other opportunities to distinguish yourself.
Don't underestimate the GMAT.
2nded. Would recommend the MBA path if you come from a non-target. and the consulting first path if you come from a target/semi-target. Networking is key here. Reach out to TFA Alum who are now consultants at the firms you'd like to join.
Thanks for the helpful input. I do come from a non-target and recognize that I'd probably have very little chance of breaking into consulting without first doing an MBA.
Do you have any insight on the plausibility of doing an MBA directly after 2 years with TFA? I imagine that most TFAers who go the MBA route work for an additional couple of years before returning to school, but it would be interesting to know how possible it is to go directly from TFA to a top MBA program.
Not as familiar, sorry. I know one person who went to Wharton directly after TFA but he was from a semi-target and interned with the MBB during undergrad.
I don't think many TFAers go to MBA directly without strong connections. TFA > Consulting is definitely common, as other people said
