No one knows who he really is, but according to Wiki:

So an unknown person is sitting around sipping a latte and no one knows he's a billionaire? Not only that, but this person has $4B in bitcoin? That he keeps in bitcoin?
Yes. The mystery surrounding the individual/figure/character Satoshi Nakamoto is... “spooky” (for lack of a better word).. to many of those inside and outside of the tech. space.

I dont think they could shut it down whether they wanted to. The very nature of bitcoin makes it decentralised , there is no central server to which you can shut down and people simply stop using bitcoin. The technology and thought behind it is amazing if you have read the whitepaper. What is shady , is that most people have no idea who this dude is. They do not even know if it a person or a group. So here is this guy who created something that is basically being called the web 3.0 and no one has an idea who he is

Lots of rumors out there. One interesting theory is that this person (or people) actually lost the private key to these coins, which is why they have never been moved. Imagine sitting on $4bn that you couldn't even access if you wanted to.
From excerpts from his old forum posts, it sounded like he's some kind of libertarian radical who thinks that Bitcoin is going to replace fiat currency and revolutionize the world. This is probably why he hasn't moved the coins.

Interesting to speculate. The individual or group has roughly 1,000,000 bitcoins registered to their address, effectively making them a billionaire. Also interesting to note, none of the coins registered to that address have been spent.
My guess is they are either dead or a group that has lost an integral person needed to access the account and without a failsafe, the private keys to the coins are 'lost'. Maybe they had failsafes in place but still decided not to spend the BTC anyways. I'm sure everyone highly involved early on don't care about a few million more or less.

If you start a new currency to replace fiat currencies and you have 100% faith in your new currency, you don't cash it in for any fiat currency lol
I don't think this was a group effort. When he still actively developed the system, his comments on the forum were all in the same style (grammar, punctuation etc.). Probably some smart guy who is actually trying to make the world a better place. Interested in money but not in owning it.
Also note that Bitcoin wasn't as revolutionary as everyone seems to think. There were many other systems quite similar to it. Nakamoto's big accomplishment is mainly fine-tuning the idea and popularizing it. The 2008 crash helped him a lot, right place right time, just as Facebook was.

Hopped on the cryptocurrency hype with Litecoin and Ethereum not too long ago. Given it's still very volatile, I feel as though the idea of blockchan and decentralized currency could play a huge role in the future. I still have doubts since the idea of decentralized currency will sound major alarms to the government and the banking system. Anyone else have some opinions on this?

Its Nick Szabo. He gave the idea of Bitgold in 1998 which essentially had the similar architecture to Bitcoins.
