The Metaverse is a meme and the last nail in Facebook's coffin

The entire concept of metaverse basically is Facebook's final, desperate attempt to remain relevant. But since it's Facebook, everyone thinks it's hot shit and Microsoft, Adidas & co are now getting in the game. I don't blame them: in a world where "innovation" is highly technical and doesn't affect the average person (think biotech, machine learning, nanomaterials), a new concept that can be sold to the masses is without a doubt likely to generate enthusiasm among the executives of those massive corporations who vie to capture the attention of consumers.

However, I think we need to look at what the Metaverse actually is: a fucking virtual universe where everyone looks like a cartoon character and which is somehow supposed to replace real life. The only reason people hype up the metaverse meme is because they hold crypto tokens related to that (like MANA) and want to pump their bags. Remember how Virtual Reality ended up? It was supposed to change everything - from gaming to healthcare - but now people just use VR headsets to watch POV porn. The "Metaverse" will have a similar fate because the hype around it is absolutely inorganic - no one wants to connect to a "virtual office" or go to a "virtual concert" where you do things that you could do in real life.

I don’t know man, if you could pick up chicks and make them like you virtually and convert that into dating them IRL or something it could be nice.

Also, if making a lot of money was possible in the metaverse, it would be a large incentive.

I think eventually we will evolve into living life in a sort of virtual world and our bodies may last 150 - 200 years with age 100 - 120 being the last times we will be able to walk around in the real world.

The metaverse is likely to be a cause to release dopamine in the mind, which is a major driving force for the success of companies like Facebook. They want us to get all sorts of dopamine and be somewhat addicted to the service, so this is the logical next step.

From an optimistic view, there will be a huge market for people to make real money on the metaverse.

You need a company that will built the infrastructure (Meta, Decentraland, etc.). Once the infrastructure is built, you can allow people to develop things in it - digital real estate for example.

There was a metaverse-like game called Second Life, and an Asian lady turned herself into a million sure from developing digital real estate that she leased to people. Of course this will all be dependent on mass adoption.

Also, not sure if anyone has tried Zwift indoor cycling, but it is amazing. It is kind of a virtual world where you interact and can race with people all over the world. It is an amazing workout and very interactive workout if you have a smart trainer (it’s harder on hills, you can draft people, etc). I wear a HR chest strap so there are a bunch of stats that come through each workout (power - watts and avg HR, peak HR).

I am extremely bullish on the metaverse. The metaverse will be a way for poor people to escape their lives, like alcohol, video games, and social media already are. Just think about it, if your real life sucks you can still be a king in the metaverse. Like you could still have status and shit in this fake world. Be fucking bad metaverse bitches and driving metaverse lambos and shit. Sure if you are balling in the real world you might be less likely to want to spend all of your time in the metaverse, but trust me, there are plenty of people who will spend as much time as possible in the metaverse, as an escape.

I disagree. I think our future will be simulated reality, once the technology is perfected. It will just be better and more convenient. Right now the metaverse looks like a fucking minecraft meme, I agree with that. But, the technology is in its infancy. In 20 years, I bet it will be close to being indistinguishable from reality.

Imagine being able to wake up and hit a few ski runs in Tahoe before going to work. Or meditating in the Himalayas. Don't get me started on porn. You can do any of this stuff at any time, and have the conditions perfect.

Yeah but what if I want to attend a "virtual gangbang" with a bunch of Japanese transvestites. Metaverse can take me there OP.

I think the metaverse having wide adoption is still farther away than the current hype indicates but I'm still bullish. I think the metaverse will be widely successful if you can make it less animated and can blend it with the real world. Imagine having an avatar and you can walk around the sidelines of the SuperBowl as it's live. You can go walk around Rome or race in the Monaco Grand Prix. You'd have a front-row seat to listen to the inaugural address or your favorite concert. Think anything you watch on tv but your avatar is there and has free motion. Will it be better than being there in person? No, but it is cheaper and far more attainable. Additionally, think about how much time you are staring at a screen all day. Might as well make it a better experience.

Super bullish on the Metaverse. But my biggest concern so far is if FB can convince people that it’s the “successor” to phones and social media. I highly doubt it, and I think most people are extremely comfortable with today’s tech.

I see AR glasses being the most plausible successor to phones, and that’s probably 10-20 years out. Think about if we could display our text messages right in front of us through a virtual screen. Or record videos easily through a voice command, etc.

I love FB’s approach to innovating, but I hope we doing give them the reigns for the newest tech. Kind of contradictory to what some people’s main hope of what the metaverse will be: a decentralized virtual world where users can develop everything

Just wait till people start getting sent to metaverse jail for posting alt right content, super hyped to be imprisoned by our tech elite overlords!

I've been permabanned from reddit (for posting the FBI NYC crime stats by race in a discussion), will likely be banned/imprisoned in the metaverse as well.

Lmao, I can absolutely see the VR world or whatever Facebook's calling it being a libleft circlejerk, because any other political ideology aren't ostracized and outcast to the point that they dress up as abominations in VR like animals, rainbow-haired punks, cyborgs, minorities, furries, africans, robots, gangsters or gays.

The metaverse has been a concept for years now, long before FB even started prepping the branding shift. Zuck is just jumping on it because it's what hot and it becomes another way to dominate people's screen time in the attention marketplace.

Imagine if you could walk around a metaverse or even augmented reality with glasses with all the key stats. When you walk by a girl this is what she sees:

verified net worth category

verified height

verifed age

verified cock length

verified avatar as same as body

bro, the metaverse will be poppin.

Keep in mind that you could have personal things like verified cock size or net worth hidden unless you are in certain metaverse locations. Maybe at the high roller metaverse bar you display your net worth and meet a lot of chicks there. Or maybe you go to a metaverse hookup bar where chicks can see your verified cock length.

But, in both situations you’d have to question if she is just with you for your cock or the money.

I think Zuckerberg is gonna make a killing off Meta.  Half of Americans under 16 have played Roblox, going from virtual world to virtual world with avatars.  The concept has worked in the past, and with Zuckerberg throwing billions at it I'm sure it will succeed.

The counterargument here is: would Facebook really stake their entire reputation and company future on something that they presumably know beforehand is a gimmick / meme? I wouldn't be so quick to jump to that conclusion. Obviously they've run into their recent share of PR problems and have been struggling with image for a while, BUT, they generate ~$30 billion of net income annually so the company is not exactly going the way of the dinosaur. Another observation throughout history: a lot of novel products/services that the masses initially perceive as unattractive or implausible eventually become mainstream.

I'm sure that FB has put in more than just some casual thought into this massive pivot/re-branding.
