Thoughts on Drake album?
I think this is absolute heat, especially since Drake comes out and speaks on the topic of having a child.

Solid for sure. Rap side was definitely better than the r&b but that's just my taste. I'd have to go with Nonstop as my favorite. I'm Upset also slaps but that's been out for a little bit already
Fan of the rap part. Has the flow/style of his older albums (take care/ So Far Gone). Emotionless best song on the album
I would put blue tints in the top 3.
Best Drake song gotta be Story of Adidon
Seriously, rapheads like drake? The dude is a walking business. No genuine artist can release LPs at his rate and have anything meaningful to say.
Give me Kendrick every 3/4 years. Or give me a 3 year Frank Ocean hiatus before he drops Blonde.
I'll listen to Poetic Justice from time to time and thats about it
Don't think people listen to his music to hear meaningful messages or guidance on life bud.
If we're talking best Drake song ever - I'd go with 5am in Toronto.
Do you think the Story of Adidon is a Drake song?
.
Not amazing, but consistent and what you'd expect and want from Drake. You can predict Drake's entire flow on any song from the second you hear the first three bars because he has like 3 repetitive flows that he uses for every single song. That being said, it's familiar, it's non-imposing, it doesn't make you think too much and the production is generally melodic and catchy. Would I ever listen to any of those songs on my way to work or while I'm at the gym? No. Will 'Nonstop' be the first song I throw on during a summer kick-back because I know Drake songs are easy to follow, non-offensive and appeal to everyone? Absolutely.
Other thought is that he absolutely re-worked a lot of the album after the Pusha T thing. His writers did a good job with that and he delivered the material convincing as always.
Completely agree. No major bangers which was disappointing
I have to slightly disagree, I am in no way a drake dick rider, but people have to admit no one is doing what he is. The dude can go on any flow and beat consistently outperform just about all other artists. I don't believe there's really ever been someone who continues to just deliver this amount of different consistent music.
He absolutely delivers consistent, quality music at a higher pace than any other artist right now. I think at least 50% of that is attributable to having the best team around him though. When you're the hottest in the game, the best writers and producers want to give their best material to you. When Lil Wayne was in his prime it was just hit after hit after hit. Then he had a falling out with the label and lost support/promotion. Everything he put out after a certain point was pretty sub-par and it was clear the support shifted to Drake and Nicki. Drake got his start as an actor and in a sense I think that's what makes him so great at being a rap superstar. He can perform his role like few others have ever performed it. But his performance and delivery are his strong points imo. A lot of his hits are pretty tee'd up for him and he just has to deliver it. I mean, we all heard the reference tracks for a lot of If You're Reading This It's Too Late. He basically just followed the reference tracks word for word, down to the ad-libs. But when he delivered the songs, they went quadruple platinum, whereas if Quentin Miller (the writer) delivered it, it woulda been a dud. Like he said in Back to Back, he may not write it all, but he's got the Midas touch when it comes to making super-hits. It's not a knock on Drake - but to me he's a better actor than a writer/rapper. He's like Leo DiCaprio - he doesn't write his own scripts (lyrics) or create his own character, but he gets the best roles (songs) and plays his part in them phenomenally.
I do admit my bias as an old-school rap head though. Times have changed and different qualities are valued in artists these days as opposed to the 90s. It's not all about being the best individual writer or having the deepest versus anymore and rap is now a multi-media entertainment industry where the entertainment value that the performers provide goes waaaaay beyond the lyrics they write and the music they make. Social media presence, music videos, branding and concert performances are almost more important than the music these days. Look at Tekashi 69 - dude is basically a famous internet troll who also happens to release music every so often. Likewise a lot of older hip hop stars could never make it in today's industry. No way in hell someone as ugly as Craig Mack or Biggie Smalls would be a fan-favorite in this day and age.
Damn. Nonstop is such a hype song for going ham at the gym
liked the song with michael jackson but 25 songs is just too much
Got a couple pretty good songs, but it's pretty monotone bullshit for the most part imo. At least it's not fucking mumble rap. Motherfuckers got no bars these days
Post a link to your soundcloud, thot!
If we're going to deport anyone, I say we start with the mumble rappers, after that we can figure the rest out.
"Nice for What" is good.
Big fan of Emotionless. Summed up the social media scene pretty well.
That line about the girl visiting Rome may have been one of the hardest bars ever
I leave Drake to those who are rushing Tri Delta this fall aka the casuals/ basics. He's a pop star. The cover of the best rap album of the year is my profile pic. Pusha T's album is also flames. Then you have "Streams of Thought", the EP by Black Thought which is produced by 9th wonder.
Im like literally rushing tri delta... How did you know? I literally can't even right now
Can you like, not? Pce Lloyd, we'll seeya.
Fire. Drake is a sort of alien! His best song ever imho is Free Smoke (due to the flow)
Anyway, is going to be too commercial
"Bills so big I call em Williams" made me laugh out loud. Liked the album overall, as REPE said above, it's melodic and non-imposing. Definitely had a few slappers that I really like (blue tint, nonstop).
OMFG Drake is literally my fave. His music is so good I literally can't even right now
Do you like Phil Collins?
“Y'all killed X and let Zimmerman live, shhh, s-streets is done“
I still can't believe people take Drake seriously
I thought its pretty bad and there isn't a single song I will play constantly. He has been in the game for a very long time and he has a lot of great songs but in the past two or three years he's lost me. As others pointed out, he is a pop star not a rapper anymore. He rides trends with up-and-coming rappers then drops a hit for the ladies. He's too big to be able to do whatever he wants. And in Genius, it says that there are 3 writers to 'Duppy Freestyle' which is just ironic.
Apart from Drake, here are my thoughts on recent albums:
1) Daytona was solid and I keep replaying Santeria. Beats are creative and they change during the songs which adds a lot of flavour. Reminds me of Lil peep songs. I think this trend will take off and we'll see lots of combination and diversity in beats.
2) ye was solid and I keep repeating all of them depending on my mood. Some lyrics are ridiculous but that's Ye.(None of us would be here without cum)
3) Kids see Ghosts(Kid Cudi) was trash imo couldn't move past the yelling.
4) Didn't hear Teyana's.
5) Nasir is also very interesting and "Cops shot the kid" is just art. I might get MS for this but I think the only reason why Nas is still popular is because of Illmatic. There isn't a single other album I enjoy from him. Collaborations on songs are also pretty bad.
6) Everything is Love was eh.. got bars but nothing I would replay daily.
7) ASAP Rocky was a flop, only a few good songs (praise the lord amongst them)
8) Belly's Mumble rap is the latest full album I listen to often. In the gym, I just play the whole album every time. Also, Rick Ross' "Rather you than me". EDIT: Also pretty much everything Meek Mill has done (last 3-4 albums). EDIT 2: Also Ab-soul.
What about you guys? Is my view distorted? Do I listen to weird music?
1.) Daytona was good 2.) Ye was total garbage 3.) KSG was alot better than Ye but alot worse than Cudi's previous album (Pain, Passion, & Demon Slaying) 4.) Neither did I 5.) Nasir was solid but I expect better from him 6.) Haven't listened 7.) ASAP was ASAP, the good songs were features. He's pretty overrated 8.) Ab Soul is one of the best rappers out there but Ab's best shit is from years ago (Control System). Meek is nice.
The album of the year is "Vacation in Hell" by Flatbush Zombies
2 & 3) Interesting to hear that KSG was better than ye. I haven't heard Pain Passion & Demon slaying. I'll hear both of them soon. 5) That's the problem. Nas set the bar so high for himself with Illmatic that he'll most likely never go past it. It will always be his best and any work he puts out will be compared to it. A gift and a curse. 7) I agree. He has a few good songs and shows creativity in videos but nothing to keep him on top or in the game for 5-10 years (I could be wrong though) 8) I have never heard of Flatbush Zombies. I will check them out today or tomorrow. I agree on your thoughts about Ab.
When you say this, I'm like, "eh". That album has straight bangers on it. But, it's still a kind of niche experience. People want the Drakes of the world, as evidenced by this thread, because they use a more universal sound, but still rap ("rap for people who don't really like rap" - Robert California). I loved the beats on that album because they had a nice creative range, some unique stuff you don't hear a lot, but not everyone wants to listen to lyricism, which is 100% unique in that album in this day.
I'm a big Nas fan, and I think Daytona was the best album produced by Ye out of the albums he released this summer.
Redditors said it well:
Yeah, 7/10 just because of the production. Flow is on point but i’d rather have Preemo beats, i need the NY sound!
8/10, imo Kanye and Nas are great, and they made the album work bc of their respective greatness, but they dont sound really mesh as well as DJ Preemo, Large P, and others would with Nasty Nas.
6.5/10, lyrics wonderful along with flow, but production is not suiting for escobar
Whaaaat?? No love for It Was Written??
even if we count It Was Written that's 2 great albums and he has 11 according to wiki. That's a pretty bad ratio. And those albums were '94 and '96 respectively. I was born in '98 and I haven't listened to all of his songs but I don't want to and I don't have to. If he had another great album, It would be known in the community.
To also build up a better idea of me as a person, my favourite all time artist is Mac Miller. He has a lot of albums on different things and you can see how he evolves. Starts off as hungry for success, gets success and starts partying, depression and drugs, reflection on depression and drugs, love. Others don't have a lot of diversity (e.g. pusha t). I say this because it's important to know where I'm coming from to understand why I can't relate much to old school rap.
It depends on you as a person and everyone has a different opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
OG poster here, and I must say after letting the album marinate for a couple days I came to the conclusion that it is in fact average. Too many skippable songs to call it great/masterpiece.
So about your comment, 3) Kids see ghost I think is absolute work of art. (Feel the Love) 7) Rocky fell off years ago, he will never touch his first mixtape or first album.
Completely agree with you on 3. Kanye and Cudi blessed us.
How are you gonna compare a legend like Pusha T to Lil Peep?
