Tips on how to prep to break into industry as industry hire?

Hi all,

I'll be working in marketing at a fairly big tech company. I discovered my interest in consulting pretty late in the game, and missed prep for university recruiting. I know it's an incredibly small % of consultants per cohort that are industry hires, but I'd love to learn:

  1. What's the average amount of time before applying/networking/landing referrals?
  2. How to best prep?

Thanks in advance

How many years of experience do you have? One would assume that you could be considered an "expert" in your industry and thus be hired in that consulting team. We had a guy with 10+ years of Big Pharma commercial experience come to us and land as a Principal (1 below Partner). This was because: 1. He had extensive experience 2. He picked wisely the consulting firm and the role responsibilities matched his skill set 3. He was able to bring in business for the firm from his old company

I would say these are the 3 main things to consider. If you can tick off 2/3 of them, then consider applying either to a firm specializing in tech or actively expressing interest for the tech sector at a generalist firm.

It is not obligatory to follow the advice above. I know another guy who went from an internal strategy team at a large beer company to a boutique strategy house post-MBA. The MBA pivot could also be an angle to consider.

Hey, thanks so much for your well-detailed reply.

I'm a college senior and will be starting work this June, so I won't be able to qualify as an industry expert any time soon. I think my best best pre-MBA would be a horizontal move into a cohort of fresh college grads -- but again, from my research I've learned that those moves are fairly uncommon/difficult.

I definitely have an open mind, though, and am cognizant of the high likelihood of not being able to enter industry prior to the MBA pivot. But I think I'll still start hustling to give it a shot once I hit my one year mark at the new job.
