To all the women in banking

I have never been someone who has ever let being the only woman in the room let it get to her. I work in markets and on the floor there's only a handful women in senior positions and on the analyst level, none. I was shadowing my first virtual client meeting and taking notes. No one on my team introduced me. But this woman who is our client spoke to me and finally I had a chance to say something. If there is anything that I have realized, it is to NOT WAIT AROUND TO BE INTRODUCED. JUST INTRODUCE YOURSELF. SIT ON THE FUCKING TABLE. I don't know why I thought I should just stay quiet until I am introduced because the truth no one will do it until you do. I want all you amazing women to share some of the tips that have helped you in your career and what you wish you could do differently!

the same applies

i'm a male analyst and sometimes no one introduces me in small zoom client meetings either - not a big deal dude

Maybe there are 1000 other reasons these people acted a way that has nothing to do with your gender. Maybe people act in their own ways largely without thinking of others. Maybe.

Glad you realized that you can take initiative and introduce yourself though.

Just had my trade dispute rejected by Schwab for a loss of 35k. This single issue alone should be a gigantic red flag to anyone who trades on their platform. If they have a system error, and you do not video record your trading (they actually said this), they will not honour their fuck up. Switching everything away from them. Fuck this company.

If you’re an analyst with 0 to contribute to the conversation besides “Hi my name is whatever and I’m an analyst” you don’t need to be introduced. If it’s a small call the VP or whoever’s leading it should say you have X and Y from the Z team or something along those lines. I wouldn’t read too much into it until you’re an associate.

Okay so maybe hijacking the thread here, but do any other girls in IB sometimes feel like everyone stares on them on the video call (when the rest of your team is all male and the client team is all guys too)? I’ve been on calls where like the client apologies specifically to me after swearing... it feels so uncomfortable that I just want to leave video off?

+1

The fuck else am I supposed to look at in my college zoom classes? The 70 year old prof? No thanks.

Re: people specifically calling you out, it’s weird you mentioned that because it happens to me all the time too. I’ll be on a call with all men and someone from management will curse and then say sorry specifically to me, or a lawyer will say “you guys... And girl.” It doesn’t bother me but sometimes makes it more awkward when they acknowledge it rather than just carrying on the convo.

People like the OP are the reason this happens.  Specifically the second one you mentioned.  Can't have it both ways

On some catch up calls with clients my MD, a woman, tells me not to go on video. When we were in office and taking calls in meeting rooms, I'm normally not near the mic unless I have something to contribute. This post contains horrible advice for all juniors in finance and perhaps most juniors in any Front office role of any kind. Not only will you come off as arrogant to certain clients, you will most likely piss off your manager.

If not being introduced is a concern to you, bring it up with whoever your manager is. It may have just been an oversight. Maybe your boss is a dick. But please, for your own sake/self preservation, do not do this.

This is terrible advice. As an analyst you should be assertive anywhere and everywhere except for client situations. You are only involved there for analytical support if needed.

If you are persecuted based on gender that is a different topic and you should address it. There are many firms where that would never be an issue. Personally I don’t care about anything other than desk performance. I’ve hired more female analysts than males, but it is 100% predicated on anticipated performance.
