Too late to get an internship for this summer?
I have no finance-related internships and none of the internships I applied to have contacted me (assuming I didn't get them). I am a sophomore attending a nontarget in upstate NY with a 3.86. Is it too late to get an internship now? I'm willing to take an unpaid internship because I really want something to put on my resume. Would it be possible to get an internship at a boutique ib or would I be better off looking for a PWM internship or something? I live in NYC if that helps.
Is it impossible? No.
Is it unlikely to the point where suggesting it is impossible is warranted? Yes.
Take a stare outside that NYC window of yours. The reality is NYC won’t be rocking and rolling for awhile. It couldn’t have less to do with your GPA and upstate non-target credentials.
That doesn’t mean throw up your hands and do nothing for the next 4 months. Keep trying to land something, but have some perspective. Open your mind to alternative routes that might pad the resume (i.e. Online trainings and bootcamps?, maybe the SIE exam?, non-finance summer help? etc.). I would hate to see you “waste” a summer waiting around for something to materialize with the lowest odds of all time for unpaid office interns/sneaking in to formal summer internships programs.
Yea I might just study for the SIE and do a bootcamp. Just bummed that I didn't get anything for the summer. Thanks for the advice!
No problem - Definitely a tough break with the current situation. You have some time left before FT recruiting as well, don’t discount that junior fall through senior fall time period.
I also come from the ol “Upstate non-target decent GPA” background. I was even a townie (yikes)... Takes a little creativity and perseverance, that is all. The uphill battle just got steeper and I don’t imagine it will get easier in the next few recruiting cycles. Take a minute to be pissed and then get back on the horse. Head down eyes up.
You won’t look back when you are 50 and kick the dirt at missing out on a summer internship or taking a year or two (if needed) to find your way in to banking through a lateral channel.
Not related to OP. Wondering if I can leave an incoming internship on my resume despite it being cancelled. Would that be ok?
are they offering it remotely?

I'm actually learning python and R now haha. I don't know the exact timeline for recruiting for 2021 internships but I know some banks have posted applications earlier this year and I'm sure some kids have already gotten offers. I think I might just get a corporate finance or corporate banking job after undergrad then try to break into ib from there.
