Trafigura Grad Program... hours, exit?
So my brother just got out of the military and is interested in the commodities firms like Trafigura, Glencore, Vitol, etc. I saw Traf has a cool 2 year, 8 month rotation grad program. He is having a kid though, and doesn't want to be slogging 80+ hours a week. 60-70, no problem.
Anyone have any knowledge of the firm, the culture, the hours, and the program - whether it usually leads to a trading job or not?
Don't know Trafigura per se but I work at a competitor and have a vague idea of the hours people working at Trafi are working. 60 hours is probably much closer to the truth of it, at least starting out. Just note that the initial learning curve is massive hence more hours.
There's no real way of guaranteeing you getting a trading job at Trafi. As a general rule in metals though, the bigger the firm you have experience at in ops, the easier it will be to get a commercial role at a smaller firm. For oil it's a little different, supermajor experience is a huge plus for becoming a trader.
.
Exxon is the epitome of a supermajor in the oil space in general but it is not somewhere that you want to go if you are interested in trading. Shell, BP, and P66 are the majors that operate what would be considered proper trading divisions.
Closer to 60 than 80.
Is he aware that at least one rotation is in Mumbai or Montevideo? Might not be the role if he's about to have a baby.
hours can be rough for junior people. also- is this their entry level grad program? if so, know it's purely a middle/back office rotation. they hire a lot of external traders. its far from a guarantee that you will be a trader
