Transferring to a Better School
I am a high school Senior going to a small state school next Fall majoring in Finance. Would transferring to a better, more well respected and has a great education after my first year being that I’m set on that major and have good enough grades be a good idea?Any advice is helpful, thanks.
Yes, especially if you are trying to break into IB/HF/PE. I am also a senior who is planning on going to a semi-target and then transferring. The extra amount of tuition for a better school will pay massive dividends in the future, near future actually.
Where are you headed? I’m going to Kelley in the fall and have given transfer a thought but not sure if it’s worth it
Not sure yet, either Rutgers NB, PSU, Case Western, UT or BC. Waiting on UT/BC, got into the rest. Kelley is a good semi-target, you should probably transfer if you can but you will be well off regardless.

would you say its just as easy to make friends sophomore year.
As someone who goes to a non-target, do it. Strive for all As and look for any internship related to finance the summer after your freshman year. It’s not impossible to break into the industry from a non-target, however it’s a lot harder and if you can change your current situation then do it.
Thank you so much, I just recently changed my major to Finance and it’s something I think I’ll fit into so now I’m just trying to figure out how I can make the most out of the degree whether it be new school, continuing education or what field of Finance. Thanks again.
As someone who made the jump to a target, I can give some perspective. It's not easy most target schools are harder to get into as a transfer, especially as a sophomore than it is for first-year admission. If you didn't have the grades/test scores in HS you need to figure out why that was and get perfect grades your freshman year along with impressive extracurricular involvement. It's going to be a difficult sell as admissions won't necessarily recognize the rigor of your college. I was at a more recognizable school with good test scores. I took math, econ, statistics, quantitative stuff that I knew I would receive credit for and show that I could handle rigorous coursework (which admissions mentioned when they gave me the call). You also need a decent story beyond I to want access to your institution's OCR because no admissions office is really desperate for another hardo at their school.
Once you get in it's not necessarily a cakewalk, it will likely be difficult to achieve any leadership positions and make friendships as that is mostly solidified freshman year, although it may work out if you transfer to a school that did not have students on campus this year.
Understand that target schools have that designation for a reason, and attract students who are extremely driven, I thought I was working hard at my freshman year institution but had to 2x ramp up to keep pace with my peers. Every opportunity on campus will be fiercely fought for. I have had more difficult interviews for internal positions/clubs than I have to interview with boutique banks and Fortune 500's. That being said, the brand name is definitely worth it, it will challenge you academically, and the alumni network is top-notch which gives you a much bigger net to cast.
