UK govnt caps on work permits- are BBs going to be affected?

Hey guys, the title says it all. We had a fellow WSO member over here sometime back, who was affected by the UK govern decision to impose caps on work permits as the firms would not sponsor.

I understand that this is anybody's guess, but I assume that all the BBs are likely to apply for work permits for their overseas applicants from the UK government. which later has the authority to obv approve or disapprove those quotas. Given the global reputation and stature of BBs in London, do you guys feel that these companies might face problems in getting their quotas approved by the UK government? The reason why I ask is because I would need a sponsorship from the BB that I got an offer from in London, and they told me that they can't confirm at the moment whether they can sponsor my work permit or not since it all depends upon the government. I am acting as a paranoid NOW!

It frankly beats me who would be suffering the most because of these quotas. Maybe UK unis since they are the ones protesting the most.

check this out. To recap it:

A company must meet certain requirements to sponsor migrant workers including but not limited to the following:

* The company must be a genuine <span class="keyword_link"><a href="//www.wallstreetoasis.com/finance-dictionary/trading-overview">trading</a></span> entity operating legally in the United Kingdom
* The company must not be a threat to immigration control
* The company must designate a contact person who is an authorising officer for the sponsorship management system
* The company must have an HR infrastructure in place to deal withimmigration control
* The company must provide all relevant supporting documents when applying

These requirements can be of particular concern for smaller businesses on a budget. Smaller businesses may not have the resources to deal with all the requirements for sponsorship licensing.

Going by that, my opinion is that BBs should not face any problems in getting their quotas approved. It would be good to hear a different take on this though.

I'm in the exact same boat... I'm at Oxbridge with a FT Analyst offer from a BB in London. I have given all of the required documents to the firm's outside immigration lawyers, and I've been told that I will be contacted sometime in March or April when the UK government decides what the new laws and quotas will be for work visas for people like myself.

I've been told by the people in Campus Recruiting that there is "no need to worry", but I've still got my fingers crossed.

Hey CZH, can I ask what is your immigration status in Uk?

I think Pkmale is a non- eu passport holder hence requires a visa to work there. Also, from what I heard tier 2 general visas would not be hurt by regulations so if you guys need that, you are relatively safe. That's my take.

If you are recruited via a milk round, then a Tier 2 visa is guaranteed. To offer a job to anyone else, you need to go into a ballot for Tier 2 permit and these are quite hard to obtain at the moment. PE firms who recruit ad-hoc and not as part of a milk-round system are affected. Intra-company transfers from outside of the UK are also not affected but there will be an earnings floor of 40,000 base.

I'm in a unique situation where I will have worked for my firm for 2 years by the time they sponsor me, but they will have to advertise my job and go into the ballot for a certificate of sponsorship as if I was a fresh recruit. If I'd happened to have worked for them for 1 year outside of the UK, they would be fine and I would be treated as an intra-company transfer, which will have no restrictions on quotas.

cap doesn't apply to jobs that pay more than £40,000per annum, so all of FO is exempt. I still think the UK govt are a bunch of morons for implementing this.

They refused some indian chemistry genius who should start research at cambridge entry and now hes at harvard instead. well done england.

Definitely agree the cap is completely stupid. These are highly skilled people ffs why would you want to put a cap on that. The justification is even worse, "We have 2 million unemployed people who can be trained for these jobs", just no A: they are probably not clever enough B even if they were it would take years to train them up to that level

Do you make any diffence with what happens for those people who want to work in the US and are unable to get a green card? Seems like it's none of your business when you are not concerned...

It's called "swing of the pendulum"!
