UMich Ross vs UC Berkeley (in state tuition)

I am a pre-admit to Ross, and I would start in Economics at Berkeley and apply to Haas at the end of sophomore year. I will be paying in state tuition (around 30k per year) compared to full tuition (around 62k per year) at Ross. I was leaning towards UC Berkeley initially due to cheaper cost, but internal acceptance to Haas is competitive (around 30 percent), so I might have to do econ instead, whereas with Ross, I am guaranteed a degree in business. I was wondering if the guarantee of being in the business school is worth the extra 30k for year. For reference, I am an Asian male living in the Bay Area and money is not an issue for me. I am interested in doing IB at SF or NY (no preference between the 2 locations).
Thanks a lot for your time.

If you can afford Ross, I’d do that for sure. You’re essentially leveraging money against risk. A sure thing is usually better than a risk. I’m in a similarly predicament with Georgetown vs. UVA. With Georgetown, it’s instant in at McDonough. At UVA, I have to apply/be accepted to McIntire. The tuition for me is pretty much the same (out of state) and McIntire isn’t as hard as Haas to get into, so these two seem like very comparable options. In your case though, there’s much less certainty. If the price is really the deciding factor, then go to UC Berkeley. That school is very highly regarded, so Econ there will still show you as a solid applicant. And if you do get into Haas, power to you.

I'm leaning to Ross, but don't think an econ degree puts you at a disadvantage. A lot of top schools DO NOT offer business on the undergrad level and people still get good jobs. That said, my bias toward Ross is also because personally, I think I'd like Ann Arbor more than the Bay Area, but your preferences may be different. No one is going to get out the book and look up what your college ranks against another college. Either school is a top school, plain and simple. Personal fit and also affordability may be the clincher here.
