Under 21 for NYC SA...What to do?
So I'll be under 21 for this summer (late birthday). Are the bars that interns go to usually strict on id's? If so, what do underage people normally do for the summer if they can't go to bars?

Interested in this too. What should we do when the group goes out for drinks? I feel this is a huge setback in trying to land a FT offer, as meshing with the group is quite important I think....
Do you go out with friends who are 21? Do what you do there. I don't think people will really care that much. I'm sure they're used to it and being invited to go out for drinks is much more reflective on how they think about you rather than your ability to drink with them. If it's really stressing you out find someone who can make you a fake.
1) get a fake, and be lowkey about it. don't tell anyone you aren't 21, use the ID inconspicuously and no one will even know it's a fake. 2) If a fake isn't an option, most events where the whole group goes out to a bar will be at places when you're allowed in if you're under 21, you obviously just can't drink.
Had many kids in my group this summer that were under 21 and most of them made an effort to go out to all the bars we went to. Sure, there were denied sometimes but that's the struggle of being underage.
Now, if you're talking about just going out as an intern class, not including full-times, to college bars (BBar, keybar, 13 step, phoebes, etc), these places generally aren't too strict on ID. Just make sure your fake somewhat resembles you and you should have no problem getting in.
Ok so the bars that interns go to aren't strict usually? I've heard mixed things
none of my underage friends ever had any trouble, you just need a solid ID and confidence and they usually won't question you. Also, if you're an attractive female that helps as well.
Don't goto 13 step with a fake. That is dumbest piece advice you could follow. Stay away from penny farthing also.
Usually SA networking events will be at bars but still allow under 21 people - they just wear a wristband and can't drink. I can imagine it would be super boring. I'm sure you can also get 21+ to sneak you drinks if you are discreet about it. Can't be missing out on that free alc.
For weekends, I'd say get your friends together, put some of your beds together, have a sleepover and play scrabble.
The bouncers at NYC have seen more IDs in a week than other cities' will see in a month, they'll know a fake when they see it. So, if you want in, it's basically at the doorman's discretion, which means either be an attractive female, or don't be a POS (which includes being loud, clearly hammered, a douche, and/or dressed like a moron).
Penny farthing and 13th step are decently strict. Most smaller places in the village you'll be fine though (Village pourhouse, Bbar, whiskey town, etc.), and if you're just getting happy hour with coworkers still in work clothes there's a 90% chance they won't card you at all. Honestly if you go clubbing and have a fake that scans you're always fine too, those bouncers generally just scan the ID and if it works you go in, they don't inspect it too much.
Really wouldn't recommend using a fake if you're with coworkers. At my old bank, HR sent around info about the interns (including birthdays) and stressed we shouldn't drink with them
Either get a fake or there's nothing you can do. Any place that you'll actually want to go to on a weekend night is going to ask for some sort of ID.
I wouldnt worry about it. Dont do anything that could fuck you. Analysts usually have no input at the end of the day...if your MD asks you to meet them out at a bar then thats a diff story
If you are out with an MD it will probably be at a place where they won't ID you.
me and my friend weren't 21 when we interned at SAs. No big deal at all - no one's judging you coz you're not old enough to hang out at a douche bar.
yeah, its not a problem from a getting the offer standpoint. firms/groups are either very conscious about 21+ pr don't give a damn, either way you are fine. Socially, NYC is tough without an id. If you live with a few people, get a big/sick place and always have beer people will hang out there and bring girls/friends. I've always preferred that to the douche bar scene in murray hill. If you really want to do something (I.e. your analyst is having a sick birthday party), borrow an id for a night, if the person trusts you borrow a credit card too in case the bouncer asks.
I think its safe to say that most firms care but not many groups/desks do. Don't ever risk it with HR at the intern events. Just not worth it.
People at the firm understand that you want to do absolutely nothing to jeopardize your chances of nailing the return offer. It won't be too bad. If you live with other people, make sure yours is the spot where people show up with friends and alcohol. Otherwise, you're sore outta luck mon frere. This is the toughest city to get around without ID.
Don't sweat it... people will totally understand if you're under 21. Not worth risking it if you've gotten in trouble before. Also, depending on the culture of the group, there might actually be only a few occasions where your group even goes out together at all. Don't assume that all the analysts in your group roll out together every Friday and Saturday after work, it depends. Your offer will not be contingent on you going out, it's much more about your personality in the office, and of course, your actual work performance. Most importantly, find underage friends to spend time with when you're off work to keep yourself sane when you're working long hours. 21+ folks will naturally gravitate towards bars, and you can't blame them.
Also, if you have to order a non-alcoholic drink at a corporate event- order a Diet Coke not a Shirley Temple or something silly that makes you stand out. Had a SA friend who got called out on his drink choice.
i like how no one is pointing out the other obvious point that if hes doing IBD hes not going to have much of a social life
I was under 21 during my SA. I did not bother getting a fake and never went drinking with the rest of my group. Got a return offer and very positive feedback from everyone. It's not a big deal
From my experience in NYC you usually don't get carded if you don't go to the popular clubs. Stick to the dive bars and don't order hard liquor.
yes, some bars don't card...you just have to find the ones that don't.
20 y/o in NYC for summer. Don't know anyone. What is there to do? (Originally Posted: 05/15/2014)
I'm from the midwest and have a MM banking internship in Manhattan over the summer. This is going to be my first time in NYC and what sucks is that I'm only 20. Without getting a fake id, what can I spend my weekends doing?
I'm also going to be the only intern at my company and I'm living in an apartment (not NYU or Columbia).
Ahh the US with that silly 21 year age limit. Ask the first year analysts maybe?
With regard to non drinking activities, attend concerts/sports events, broadway shows, join a rec league downtown, and just have fun getting lost in NYC. Its massive beyond belief and you can walk around it forever
If you don't have an extremely baby face, you can go to pretty much any bar or restaurant and drink. I've been ID'd 3 times since I moved here and when I shave my face I don't look like I'd be over 21.
This is also more common in the non trendy areas. I just went out with my hockey team to a bar in Sunnyside and we just walked in and started drinking and we had a couple under 21ers with us and it was no problem at all.
You can also spend your weekend being active and doing things other than drinking. (Who wants to do that though?!)
If you live in the Northeast and you're bored and have nothing to do, you have nobody to blame but yourself.
If you are willing to take the train to NJ, I may be able to drive you or others to diving or hang gliding.
But if you have a banking internship, you will probably spend your weekends working.
Don't know what it's like in NY, but in my college town (small midwest) you could still get into bars under 21, they would just give you a wristband. Does NY do that?
I can't believe how many kids don't get fakes anymore. Very discouraging.
I have sold like 20 copies of my state ID though, which is nice!
When I went to NYU, pretty much half the class got fake ID's during welcome week....so I don't think it should be too hard to find a fake ID (although I'm sure things could've have changed in the past decade). I think you can even order fake ID's online now.
If you're 20 and don't look like a teenager just flash the bouncer your real ID. The key is to not seem nervous, which you shouldn't be since the worst case scenario is that they give you your ID back and you walk across the street to the next bar. I started doing this as soon as I was 20. You'd be surprised how many bouncers either can't do math or simply scan the ID without looking.
