unknown small cap Private Equity in Italy vs. CEE IB
I am an MSc in Finance student at a target European university. My question is which one would be better for my CV, and for my chances into getting into a bulge bracket IB next summer. An unknown small cap PE in Italy, or an internship in a known IB such as Societe Generale/Citi/UniCredit, but in my home country of Bulgaria?

If your internship is in front office IB then you're more likely to gain contacts and leverage that into an offer where you want to be in Europe. So it's a matter of you being able to preform and network well with your managers gaining their support.
What would be looking better on the CV though, for a summer internship in bulge bracket in Western Europe next summer?
Both are fine.. but what you're missing is that a recommendation from someone senior in the bank would carry more weight than anything. You've gotten a stamp of approval and have been tested and preformed well for a long period of time rather than for a 2/3 hour interview.
Go for the IB. Assuming both are internships.
I made the mistake of picking up a small name PE... the learning is great intially but you hit a ceiling quickly. There isn't as much of an insitutional framework to support your learning and its pretty hit and miss.
At least with an IB internship, you would have directly portable skills which you can leverage into something valuable in a few years.
