USC Economics major + minor from Marshall for IB etc?

Hey guys,

I’m really interested in going to USC for undergrad, most probably to major in economics at Dornsife if I get in. Just looking ahead, would economics be the best major to break into the world of investment banking, Asset Management, consulting etc. from USC? I do not want to major in business from Marshall at undergrad (planning to do an MBA in the future). Would taking a minor at Marshall, perhaps business finance, be advantageous? What types of majors and minors do recruiters from firms in these areas look for? (Say I was only looking at USC)

Thanks!

I have two friends at SC ones a Marshall major and the other is an Econ major. Both trying to break into high finance and the Econ guy wishes he had applied to Marshall instead when he transferred from a CC. To be honest though, USC being the regional semi-target school that it is, you could really use that cult-like Trojan network from either major. I just feel more Marshall people are probably in IB, AM, Consulting, etc, and for networking purposes it might give you a slight advantage over the Econ.

If you're going to USC, do Marshall, even if it is as a minor. Yes, USC is a target in California, and yes, they can major in Business whereas UCLA students can not, but UCLA has the Undergraduate Business Society which is leagues ahead of any IB preparation group that USC has. If you want to break in from USC, you will almost have to do Marshall.

Even if you're in Dornsife, you can access all of Marshall's recruiting events. I'm a triple major at USC with Econ being one of them, and I've had no issues with recruiting, especially since the on-campus recruiting website is the same for everyone. You won't get the in-depth finance knowledge from Dornsife, but you can still get interviews with the best banks pretty easily.

Best Response

Thanks so much for all the responses, much appreciated! I have a bunch of more questions: Am I making the right decision to not to a BBA? People say it is better not to do a business degree before an MBA but for what reason? Does a business degree really prepare you better for a job in IB or is it just the Marshall name?

Also do internships and job experience that I did while in school and after I graduated high school (before my compulsory military enlistment for 2 years, I am a Singapore citizen, I'll be going to college when that's done) that are on resume boost my chances on internships and jobs while in college and after I graduate college respectively? I interned in Standard Chartered Bank for a few weeks in the retail banking products side and also job shadowed an asset manager for a few days in a boutique AM firm. I also did administrative work in the logistics department of an MNC engineering firm, ABB (although that has nothing much to do with banking and such).

Sorry for all the questions guys, thanks so much!
