UVA vs IU Kelley (Direct Admit); Best Undergrad for IBD?

Hey,

I've been accepted to both Indiana University and UVa, but I've been offered Direct Admit to Kelley at IU, meaning I can start at the business school starting my freshman year. As for UVa, I'll have to wait until my sophomore year to apply to Mcintire. Hopefully I can get in... IU has the Investment Bankers Workshop / Network that I'm also interested in.

Which school has better job prospects for IBD, and what would be the better school for internships, etc.? Any other thoughts?

I'll be paying out of state tuition for both schools, but IU offered me a scholarship for $11k a year. No word on financial aid from UVa so far.

Thanks!

I have heard University of Virginia is very strong in this regard, but would also see what others have to say.

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature."

If your main goal is IBD keep in mind that the IB Workshop at IU has 100 percent placement in ibanking most going to BB. For reference BAML took 8 kids from the workshop this year. It would take about a 3.7 gpa and knowing all of the technicals/showing an interest/joining clubs etc. to get into the IBW. About 30 kids get in each year. But if you are risk averse and dont think you can get a 3.7 the reputation of UVA would provide more value than IU.

Personally I would pick IU with the scholarship and go hard for banking but either way you cant go wrong.

Thanks for the input. What I'm most worried about is how hard it would be to enter the workshop. Everyone says "If you can get in, you'll get a job." but just how difficult is it to get in? 30 people seems awfully competitive...

Its competitive. Its the cream of the crop of Kelley. But if you dont get into the IBW you can join the ibanking seminar which is pretty much the same thing, with the same exposure to banks, but for less qualified candidates. Also there are workshops for IM, real estate, and consulting so IBW isnt the end-all, be-all.

Was scrolling through this and noticed this. Wanted to update in case any prospective students saw this post. Nowadays about 80% of the workshop goes to MM and a large number work in Chicago. Seems to have changed significantly from it was back in 2014.

I went to UVA and have friends who transferred from Kelley to McIntire. If you want NYC, go UVA. If you are okay with Chicago with a healthy offering of NYC, Kelley wouldn't be a bad choice. That said, the overall program is better at UVA. If you can get into the Workshop at IU, you will get a banking job.

IU grad here. Even if you don't get in at the IBW you can get a lot of banking jobs. Nowadays, firms are not just hiring from the workshop. But that being said UVA>IU for wall street and prestige. If you want Chicago then go for IU other than that UVA. But remember getting into McIntire is very difficult. Go for the best fit.

I had a similar decision to make, Michigan (no admit at Ross) or Kelley (direct admit and schol). I choose Kelley. But I was not that into IB.

I knew Ross is hard to get into, but I was told and read that McIntire's acceptance rate is like 60-65% or thereabouts. You just reminded me of the scary fact that of course, there is the chance that I won't get into McIntire... When did you go to IU and were you happy with the experience?
