Vancouver Investment Banking?
What's the investment banking outlook on Vancouver?
Heard from some that it flat out sucks and heard from others that it's just a different pace, whatever tf that means.
Any info on hours?
Comp?
Recruitment?
Exits? Heard theres some MM PE/HF but not really sure
Absolute garbage full of stock promoters pushing shitty weed deals.
REPE is a little more real out there, but it really is Toronto or bust...
mining and lumber are pretty much the only thing out there
curious as to comp rent prices there r fucking aids
yea, my friends who work in vancouver IB went to ubc/sfu, and also went to highschool in vancouver. so living at home and not renting a 2500$ one bedroom apartment downtown is pretty much a must lol
Not sure about IB, but Big4 comp is def lower in Vancouver. Supply and demand... a lot of people want to live there.
Some of the big5 banks seem to have a couple guys here or there. There's a couple boutique banks out there, don't know much about them though.
Big 5 banks + NBF all have offices and I think Canaccord's HQ is still in Vancouver. Not all big 5 are created equal and IIRC RBC and BMO were stronger than the rest with Scotia and TD being particularly weak. Each bank will hire maybe 1 Analyst a year, typically from UBC and maybe SFU.
Very little dealflow vs. bigger Canadian markets like Toronto and Calgary. Comp is also lower so I think the only good reason to work there is if you really wanted to stay in Vancouver.
Avoid boutiques like the plague, they're garbage and you wont learn anything. Like someone else here said, packed with shysters who were pushing junior mining companies a couple years back and now pushing weed stocks. As an Analyst you wont build any sort of skill-set that you would need to be credible.
In terms of PE/HF, assume by MM you mean Micro Market as pretty much all buyside is minuscule and in no way comparable to the industry in the US: way less sophisticated, tiny AUM and pay sucks.
Note: I went to UBC but I've been out of Vancouver for a solid decade and all my friends who stayed have gradually left so maybe my intel is a bit stale.
big 5 in vancouver hires ~5+ analyst per year now, but focus is still on UBC and SFU, and compensation in vancouver is the same (at least for last year) as in toronto.
focus on metals & mining, hours very dependant on group and deal flow, but generalizing it as a whole toronto > vancouver in terms of hours.
for recruitment, go to UBC/SFU to work in vancouver IB. p.s there are more ubc/sfu kids working in toronto than there are queens/ivey/etc kids working in vancouver to add some perspective
exits pretty much non existent in vancouver.. maybe bcimc and leith wheeler, but youd need to go to toronto for exits. most vancouver bankers dont even pursue exit opps, due to fast track promotion system (AN to AS1 in ~1-2 years) and most stay on as career bankers
Anyone have any insight on the Vancouver s&t scene?
the “floor” (maybe a quarter of a floor) operates on Eastern time, which means waking up at 3AM and getting to work at 4 AM – markets close at 1 PM and it’s off to happy hour
