Waiting "x" time to message a LinkedIn member after following them

1) Would you follow someone that you know of and they most likely know of you (Same age group)? 2) If you follow them, what is the max amount of time that is reasonable to wait until messaging them to grab a coffee?

I am asking because an old acquaintance of mine (not close friend) has a sibling that I would like to connect with to eventually grab a coffee because this person has interned at relevant places that I am interested in working at. Should I wait a few months before recruitment season to follow them? Or can I follow them now and message them before recruitment season to grab a coffee? Thanks
