Waitlisted after first round interview?

Is it usual that banks waitlist candidates after their first round interview? I know this happens after the final round but not sure about first round.

Recently received an email from HR a few days after the first interview saying they have more interviews to do in the following week and will come back with updates in the week after.

Suppose this means I’m waitlisted, but wonder what’s the point of waitlisting people after first round. Thought they’d just make a binary decision at this stage.

It sounds more that the bank is going to finish the first round and then move on only with selected candidates.

you're still in the game but I'd not say you have been waitlisted at all
