Warning for Non-EU Interns in London

Posting from a throwaway.

You may not be getting an offer in London. Today was the last day of my internship at a top 10 BB, and none of the non-EU interns got job offers due to the fact that there was a new law passed that makes it very hard to hire non-EU interns (I'm Chinese); there's a chance of getting our offers moved to other regional offices, but who knows if that will happen.

All the non-European immigrants in my internship had the same outcome. Apparently, however, some banks in London are giving offers to their non-European interns.

Best of luck to those of you in the same boat, but the situation looks very, very bleak.

Damn. I knew this was coming.

The law did not see support from any of the major players across industries though. It has something to do with cutting down on the number of students who move to the UK on the pretext of education and just start working once they are there and eventually convert their status. A lot of them join random universities due to the relative ease of entry into the UK as a student.

What you're saying is not entirely true.

In my summer intern class at a BB as well, several non-Europeans got offers in London. However, from what I understood, the job has to be publicly advertised for 15 days before they can officially receive the offer.

Helic, I also heard today about another bank giving offers to some internationals - I will amend the OP.

So what gives? Are some of the banks just not able to find ways to get around these new regulations? I'm having trouble understanding why some places were not willing or able to figure out ways for their interns to get offers, while others were.

My hunch is that some of these banks' legal/compliance departments are willing to take on the extra headache, while others just don't want to deal with it.

Anyone else affected by this?

I have to disagree, as I personally knew a couple kids who just graduated from unis in the UK and are in the same boat as me. But maybe it is because they already graduated, literally a few weeks before this new law was put into place. Lots of unknowns, to be honest.
