What are the different corporate roles and paths?

Hi guys,

I'm currently an analyst at a BB in the US. I am still undecided about my long term career route and would like to learn more about the different roles / divisions in corporations, businesses etc. To be frank I got funneled into IB really young so I don't know much about corporate careers. I know there are operational roles, accounting / treasury roles, sales and marketing but I am trying to wrap my head around what the people in these different divisions do, and how the skills they acquire set them up for future roles (what roles get you to CEO, CFO, COO.) Also, if someone could explain how an analyst can exit / transition into these corporate roles after a 2 year stint that would be great! I would really appreciate any input or guidance!

I know corp development is internal M&A etc which is why a lot of people there have a IB background. I've heard of FP&A which is an accounting type role from what I know. Both of these fall under the CFO I believe.

Depending on what you do in IB (M&A or DCM) there are a couple of spots you could transition too pretty seamlessly. Like other people have mentioned, corp dev is going to be the opposite side of the M&A coin, so you will find many people in those departments are ex-IB. For DCM the transition to Treasury (specifically the capital markets team) is pretty normal as well. I work for a Fortune 50 company on the capital markets team, and while the comp doesn't really compete with banking, the hours are unbeatable. I work 8:00 - 5:30 pm everyday, get home for dinner with my kids, and pull the occasional few hours of weekend work around board meetings.

Thanks! What are the internal career paths available to you in Corp dev and treasury? Do you just move up the ranks and hope to get to CFO or can you lateral to strategy, biz dev, sales, or other divisions?  And yes, the lifestyle is definitely a consideration; ready to work hard but not at the total expense of my health, social life, and hobbies lol.

Good questions! In my group, Treasurer is probably the highest point you will be able to ascend to, and even that is a real long-shot given the size/prestige of the company. More likely you work your way up to the Director/VP level, and then lateral out to a smaller company as their Treasurer in pursuit of better comp/equity piece.

From what I understand Corp Dev is similar, you are trying to get to the director level and either ride out that considerable compensation and stock options or lateral out to be a smaller companies CFO or head of M&A, or something similar that interests you.
