When Are You Planning on Returning to the Office?

Just curious that for those of you in PE or IBD (no interns or prospects pls) what is the general expectation among your team mates about when you can return to your office? end May? or late this summer (like August or Sept?).... I am guessing it's proven really hard to be executing transactions or having management meetings via Zoom or from home.

Interested in hearing opinions of those based in the US

my firm (a BB) is taking a regional approach. NYC people probably not for some time, in other locations, particularly the south, will be a gradual approach. I think first it'll be employees only, no external visitors, but the option to work from home and all the associated perks with that will remain (normally it's not an option for PWM non-exempt employees). likely enforcing some level of protection, either masks, social distancing, etc., but social distancing is not practical for an office environment so no clue how that'll happen. betting this happens mid May unless southern states fuck this up (thanks a lot for jumping the gun Georgia, I hope the best though!)

second phase will be reopening external visitors, with likely some enhanced cleaning procedures and some sort of questioning (did they eat the Wuhan platter at lunch? have they been using a jockstrap as a mask? do they wash their hands in bleach?). I'm guessing this starts June 1.

final phase is full reopen, no more moratorium on biz travel, every employee back in office (highly encouraged, but not mandatory), no more pre-approvals needed for visitors. end of Q2.

the good news is by the end of Q2, I'll have a 100 day beard and freak the fuck out of everyone (never had a beard in my life)

In NYC the word coming out of almost all the name brand banks for groups that don’t NEED to be in the office (I.e Investment Bankers) is late summer / early fall as base case, but with some flexibility to move into mid summer. One EB told people it could be the rest of the year depending on re-infection rates. I expect we in the city start seeing rolling office openings starting mid to late June but with most not being in the office till August time frame - at which point everyone will go to the hamptons and it’ll turn into September.

The option to WFH is great and I will definitely take advantage of it more when lock-down is over, but I honestly miss going to the office and spending time with colleagues. Since projects have slowed down now, procrastinating is better at home than in the office but in general I miss the social interaction. I guess I'm also lucky to have a solid set of colleagues, but I would want to go back. The ideal going forward for me would be Mon-Thu in the office and Friday at home.

Is a firm legally allowed to require employees to come back at a certain point? If say an employee feels unsafe traveling by plane to get to their home office or is immuno compromised, will the firm make exceptions / do you think people will exploit this? From a legal end, it doesn't make sense for a firm to force employees to come back at a specific date, especially if new cases are still popping up in a few months.

Funny how this thread is a couple weeks old and all the people from late April were saying mid-May...feel like we haven't made much progress in terms of re-opening sinc then

Will update my computer soon and leave Incognito so I will disappear forever. How did I achieve Neanderthal by trolling? Some people are after me so need to close account for safety.

For my office in SF, it is going to be based on when the building opens up, and there may be a max person per sqft for each floorpan in the building. As for the elevator, that is a risk.

The target right now is mid-September for the building to open.
